Free Insurance Quotes For Lesser Cost ? Bathroom Remodeling

It is expensive to possess a car not only for its price itself but also because of the required new jersey car insurance. It becomes more costly for a teen driver. As soon as they begin to shortlist the vehicle choice, parents ought to be requesting for free insurance quotes already. This is how they get to score better deals and assess other factors they could affect to lower the premium cost.

There are several ways to get car insurance without spending a fortune. So rather than resorting to other means to be able to pay off the premium, parents should seek out means to save on premium first. Awareness and proper understanding of factors involved surrounding car insurance of teens must be gained first. The factors involved are age, location, experience and model of the car. A few of these factors cannot be manipulated. So a focus on those that parents can indeed be in charge of is called for.

New Jersey car insurance sot relies on the age and the experience factor which teen drivers are obviously lacking. However, insurance agencies recognize teens that show a specific level of maturity. Most of the time, they base it on the teenager?s performance at school. Full time highschool students who at least have a 3.0 GPA can avail of discount insurance. Someone who with a B average can enjoy 25% off discount.

A teen with a formal driving course is more likely to save on insurance too. Some insurance providers offer up to 10% discount. In addition, if an adult pledges to supervise and accompany every driving agenda of the teenager, that is duly noted too. Insurance companies are concerned with risks, one they might not be willing to take for teen drivers so parents can definitely help in this regard.

Expensive and high performance cars are not only a magnet of thieves but also cost much to repair but old cars may cost as much. Insurance companies evaluate the safety factor of vehicles. In other words, parents should put this into consideration before the car purchase. Free insurance quotes should be regarded as soon as there?s a list of car models to consider.

Browns hire Brad Childress as OC

By TOM WITHERS

updated 12:35 a.m. ET Jan. 28, 2012

CLEVELAND - Pat Shurmur brought in a close friend to help him fix Cleveland's broken offense.

Shurmur hired former Minnesota coach Brad Childress as his first offensive coordinator on Friday, reuniting two coaches who spent seven seasons together on Andy Reid's staff with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Browns confirmed Childress' hiring with a release that did not include any quotes.

Childress, who spent nearly five seasons with the Vikings before he was fired in 2010, will try to improve the Browns' dismal offense, which scored just 218 points last season, finished 29th in total yardage, 28th in rushing and 24th in passing. He'll also have input in the team's vital decision at starting quarterback. ? a choice that could impact the club for years.

The 55-year-old Childress was a logical choice to join the Browns, who went 4-12 in their first season under Shurmur. In addition to being tight with Shurmur, Childress is familiar with the West Coast offense the Browns installed last year and he's represented by agent Bob Lamonte, who also has Shurmur and Browns president Mike Holmgren as clients.

Shurmur juggled both head coach and coordinator duties during a troublesome first season in Cleveland. It's believed Shurmur will initially call Cleveland's plays next season but he intends to turn things over to Childress, who recently interviewed for Tampa Bay's head coaching job. Childress has only one season (2006) of experience calling plays.

Childress is the third former NFL head coach on Shurmur's staff, joining defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes.

Childress was Philadelphia's offensive coordinator from 2003-05 when Shurmur coached the Eagles quarterbacks. While he was with the Eagles, Childress went to three straight NFC title games and the Super Bowl in 2004.

Shurmur was asked about Childress during his season-ending news conference on Jan. 3.

"I know Brad very well," Shurmur said. "He and I worked together for a long time. He's a terrific coach."

Childress went 39-35 in four-plus seasons with the Vikings, twice leading them to the playoffs and going 1-2. Minnesota won division titles in 2008 and 2009, when the Vikings made it to the NFC title game with quarterback Brett Favre, whom Childress had famously picked up at the airport. But after a 3-7 start in 2010, Childress was fired by owner Zygi Wilf one day after the Vikings were blown out at home by rival Green Bay.

The Browns considered hiring an offensive coordinator before last season but didn't find a suitable candidate. Holmgren suggested Shurmur maintain play-calling duties to control the offense and build a stronger bond with second-year quarterback Colt McCoy. Shurmur, though, seemed overwhelmed at times as the Browns had some communication breakdowns and time-management issues.

The addition of Childress should free up Shurmur during the week as he prepares for games.

"I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down on some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more," Shurmur said after the season. "That's a key piece."

More college freshmen see getting good job as key goal, poll finds

Seeing their parents struggle with unemployment and other money worries over the last few years, the nation's current batch of college freshmen increasingly view a bachelor's degree as a necessary ticket to better jobs, according to a UCLA survey being released Thursday.

In responding to the "American Freshman" poll, 85.9% of first-year students across the country said that being able to land a good job is a very important reason for attending college. That is the strongest response to that question in the 40 years it has been asked and is sharply higher than the 70.4% reply in 2006, before the recession began.

The survey asks freshmen to select reasons they are pursuing higher education. For a generation, the most popular one was "to learn more about things that interest me." This year, 82.9% said that was a major motive. But since 2009, the concern about jobs has been on top.

Also setting a record was the response to a query about whether becoming very well off financially is an "essential or very important" objective. The survey showed that 79.6% of the students described such affluence as a compelling goal, up from the pre-recession response of 73.4% in 2006 and double the levels during the more counter-cultural 1970s.

"I think it's understandable. Like everybody in the country, these students are reacting to a time of recession," said John H. Pryor, managing director of UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, which conducts the annual survey.

But he cautioned that it would be wrong to assume that the students want to make money just for luxurious lifestyles. In fact, the report also shows that, compared with students 40 years ago, current freshmen say they are much more interested in having children. So, Pryor said, they may be more aware of what it costs to raise and educate a family.

"They may want to make sure their kids can go to their first-choice colleges without a lot of loans, as opposed to buying the plasma TV and the BMW," he said.

Begun in 1966, the poll is considered the nation's most comprehensive look at college students' attitudes. Nearly 204,000 incoming freshmen at 270 four-year colleges and universities decided to participate at the start of the current school year.

Compared with classes ahead of them, today's recession-era freshmen reported being more studious and sober during high school. These students may fear that bad grades and rejections from good colleges could lead to economic insecurity, analysts said.

Those who reported that they studied or did homework for six or more hours a week as high school seniors rose to 39.5%, up from 34.7% in 2009. In the same period, the share of students who said they drank beer frequently or occasionally in high school dropped from 39.5% to 35.4% and those who said they spent some time "partying" every week during high school declined from 69.7% to 65.3%.

Liberal social causes are becoming more popular on campuses, with supportive responses to many of these questions on the rise.

For example, 71.3% said they supported gay and lesbian couples' right to marry, and 60.7% said abortion should be kept legal. Additionally, 49.1% backed the legalization of marijuana.

Will Beyonce Join The Ranks Of Celebrity Mommy Moguls?

Mommy Mogul Kimora Lee Simmons and experts discuss the balance between motherhood and business.

<P>Now that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> has added a new job to her resume, mom, there's a slew of potential new projects the pop-star mogul might add to her ever-growing empire. Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Victoria Beckham are just a sampling of pop stars who have managed to write a whole new chapter into their careers thanks to motherhood. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724613.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> These celebs have expanded their personal brands to include children's clothing lines, books, songs and movies and have even revitalized themselves in their image as super-glam supermoms. As Beyonc&#233; looks to the future and her role as <a href="/news/articles/1676906/beyonce-jay-z-baby-born-ivy-blue.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>'s mama, mommy mogul Kimora Lee Simmons and Christopher Gavigan, who works with Jessica Alba on her Honest brand, talked to MTV News about the balance between parenthood and the business world. "I always tell people I'm not the glamorous Hollywood mom," said Simmons, who continues to expand her own fashion brand to include Shinto Clinical skincare line. "I'm not the kind of celebrity that lives in the spotlight. I'm famous from work that I do. I've always been in the business and raised my family in the business so it's like a second nature for me. I think that's the key is striking a balance. For me it's always about prioritizing." What's Simmon's advice for new celeb moms looking to follow her lead? "I think it's about choosing what you want and going after that. Do the best you can, but you don't have to be Superwoman." And Simmons isn't the only Hollywood A-lister trying to do it all. Alba launched Honest with Gavigan to give moms a place to find eco-friendly products for their babies. "Jessica is like every other mom. Every other mom is a major multi-tasker," Gavigan said of working with the star. "Jessica was very in line with everyone, the average mom and dad out there." "Find what you're passionate about and go do that," he advised to any future mom moguls. "You articulate that in a brand or in a way you feel from a business perspective that you feel you get your focus articulated in some meaningful or special way. A lot of it is partnerships and leveraging the greatest assets of each other." With all that advice in mind, some celebrity experts weighed in on what B just might do now that she is a mom. "I think it's going to come very naturally for Beyonc&#233; to emerge as this celebrity mom, just given all the current existing brand extensions she has," said David Caplan, who has worked at <i>Star</i> and <i>People</i> magazines. "Having a child will give her legitimacy, obviously, to the moms, and clearly there's lots and lots of money to be had there. So, I think you will see her lend her hand in the baby arena, whether it's her brand extensions intentionally or just emerging as some sort of Hollywood celebrity mom icon, which happens sometimes with these celebrity mothers. "Whether or not it's intentional or not, I think she's definitely going to emerge as a celebrity mother icon," he continued. "And I'm sure she'll take advantage of that and invest in her brand." A suggestion from another expert fits right in line with the first move her hubby, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a>, made when he dropped his track <a href="/news/articles/1676945/blue-ivy-carter-new-jay-z-song-glory.jhtml">"Glory"</a> just says after Blue's birth, which features his <a href="/news/articles/1677033/blue-ivy-beyonce-jay-z-leaves-hospital.jhtml">baby girl</a>. "I think that this is a woman that has tried terribly hard to keep her private life private," HuffPost celebrity columnist Rob Shuter said. "I think it'll be the same with her baby. I can't imagine her doing a Bethenny Frankel move." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:728285/cp~vid%3D728285%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A728285" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> <i>How do you think motherhood will affect Beyonc&#233;'s career? Pitt to attend New Orleans homebuilding group gala

(AP) ? Talk show host Ellen Degeneres and "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson are hosting a star-studded gala in New Orleans to benefit Brad Pitt's Make It Right home rebuilding effort.

Pitt will attend the $1,000-per-person gala on March 10 called "A Night to Make It Right," which will include performances by singers Sheryl Crow, Rihanna, Seal and Dr. John, said foundation spokeswoman Taylor Royle.

Pitt launched Make It Right in 2007 to help Lower 9th Ward residents who lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Lower 9th Ward was one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods when Katrina caused levees to fail, inundating roughly 80 percent of the city with floodwater.

Pitt worked with architects to come up with designs for stronger, safer and more energy-efficient houses than the ones residents lost. So far 75 homes have been built, six more are under construction and construction is set to begin on roughly eight others in coming months.

"Our goal is 150 houses, and this fundraiser is going to help us reach that goal," said Royle, noting that all proceeds will benefit Make It Right.

Royle said it has taken more time and money than the foundation originally thought to build 150 homes. Getting in touch with families, making decisions about their homes, getting finances in order and clearing paperwork takes months, she said.

"It's been a long road to get these families home," Royle said. "But we're happy with our progress, and we're looking forward to celebrating the progress we've made."

Royle said a video of Make It Right's work over the past four years will be presented at the gala. A four-course dinner organized by chef John Besh will include courses by chefs Emeril Lagasse and Giada de Laurentiis.

Degeneres, a New Orleans native, has already donated more than $2 million to Make It Right.

"She's been one of our biggest supporters," Royle said.

Jackson, a Baton Rouge native, was quick to offer his participation in the event, Royle said.

Other celebrities serving on the event's host committee who may also be attending include actors Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey and director Spike Lee.

The gala will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans. Comedian Aziz Ansari will host an after party. Tickets for that event start at $150.

What Should Liam Neeson Punch Next?

Liam Neeson stars in The Grey as a guy who's taking on some wolves.

Open Road Films

Liam Neeson stars in The Grey as a guy who's taking on some wolves.

Liam Neeson used to be in fancy-pants movies like Schindler's List and Nell and Rob Roy ... I mean, in 1993's Ethan Frome, he played Ethan Frome.

At some point, though, he got really into beating people up. In 2008, he had a huge hit with Taken, where he beats people up because they kidnapped his daughter. In Clash Of The Titans, he vicariously beat people up by releasing the Kraken. (Not a euphemism.) Then his desire for action became such that he actually joined The A Team! (You probably didn't see that one.) Last year in Unknown, he beat up everyone who didn't recognize him. (Which was everyone.) In the upcoming Battleship, if I am understanding the premise, he's going to fight aliens with boats.

And this Friday, in The Grey? Wolves. That's right. Liam Neeson is fighting wolves. And I'll be darned if, at the end of this trailer, it doesn't look like he's strapping on some improvised claws to punch a freaking wolf.

This naturally raises the question: After you've punched a wolf and released the Kraken, what is left to punch? Thank goodness we have suggestions, for satisfying plots or great movies or, of course, both.

Cats. In Claws, Neeson plays a former FBI agent who breaks up a ring of illicit mouse trafficking, only to find that the perpetrators are highly trained Siamese cats. Fighting ensues.

Bankers. In Foreclosure, Neeson plays a college professor whose house is being foreclosed on by the ominous, much hated bank that recently took over his small town's only financial institution. He goes to the institution's headquarters to get some answers. Fighting ensues.

Adam Carolla. In Funny Man, Neeson plays a father of five whose wife runs off with a comedian played by Carolla who turns out to be up to no good and secretly plotting to kill her for her life insurance money. Fighting ensues.

Ice dancers. In Spin, Neeson plays a grieving widower whose only son has run off to join an ice show, which he learns is a front for a dangerous cult. He goes on the road to bring his son home. Fighting ensues.

Best Buy television salespeople. In Warranty, Neeson plays a down-on-his-luck real estate agent who wants to buy a television for his ailing wife, Greta. But when he arrives at the store, he's told that the store is out of the model they advertised on sale, and he has to figure out how to get an expensive plasma model out of the store in time for Greta to watch Downton Abbey. Fighting ensues.

Baristas. In Venti, Neeson plays an artisanal fair-trade coffee roaster who learns that a major coffee shop chain is going to stop carrying his beans and switch to a mass-produced brand. He goes to one of the franchise locations to talk to the customers and plead his case, but he's told he has to leave, and eventually, a misunderstanding leads to false reports that he's holding the store hostage. Fighting ensues.

Maggie Smith. The title: Dowager. The spoiler alert: Maggie Smith wins. Fighting is concluded.

Steven Seagal. In The Ponytail, Neeson plays a high-school principal who learns that a former action-movie star is planning to rob his school during an assembly. Only the principal can stop the siege and protect the school's educational booty. Fighting ensues.

Aquaman. In Sea Floor, a submarine commander is surprised to learn that he's sharing his domain with an intruder he's always assumed to be mythical. But that's not the case, and it's going to be every man for himself as they battle for control. Fighting ensues.

More wolves. However many wolves there are in this movie? More wolves in the next movie. FIGHTING ENSUES.

Rising wealth of Asians straining world fish stock (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Rising wealth in Asia and fishing subsidies are among factors driving overexploitation of the world's fish resources, while fish habitat is being destroyed by pollution and climate change, U.N. marine experts said Tuesday.

Up to 32 percent of the world's fish stocks are overexploited, depleted or recovering, they warned. Up to half of the world's mangrove forests and a fifth of coral reefs that are fish spawning grounds have been destroyed.

The U.N. Environment Programme says less-destructive ways of fishing that use more labor and less energy are needed to help restore the health of the world's oceans and coasts.

The agency is leading a five-day conference in Manila of experts and officials from 70 governments.

Jacqueline Alder, head of UNEP's marine, coastal and freshwater office, said the increasing ranks of rich Asians are driving demand for better quality fish that are often not abundant, adding pressure to their supply.

"People don't want to eat the little anchovies anymore when they can eat a nice snapper or grouper ? much nicer fish, shows much more of your wealth," she told reporters.

Alder said booming population, more awareness of health benefits from eating fish, fuel and boat-building subsidies in industrial fisheries, weak management and limited understanding of ecosystems' values are also driving fish overexploitation.

She said subidies should be reduced or eliminated, fishing gears should be less destructive, and the number of boats and fishers reduced. Habitat management should also be strengthened and marine protected areas established.

Fish is the main source of protein for up to 20 percent of the of world's population and some 180 million people are directly or indirectly employed by the fishing industry, she added.

Vincent Sweeney, UNEP's coordinator for the Global Program of Action to prevent marine environment degradation from land-based pollutants, said up to 90 percent of sewage in developing countries is discharged untreated into rivers, lakes and oceans, posing one of the most serious threats to water resources.

Other pollutants from land including nitrogen and phosphorous from fertilizers and detergents result in hypoxia or "dead zones" where too many nutrients cause an undesirable growth of plants that compete with coral reef and other marine life for oxygen.

Jerker Tamelander, head of UNEP's coral reef unit, said healthy coral reefs can produce up to 35 tons of fish per square kilometer each year while there is a catch reduction of 67 tons for every square kilometer of clear-cut mangrove forest.

The global market value of marine and coastal resources and industries is estimated at $3 trillion per year or about 5 percent of the global economy, he said. Non-market value such as climate, water, nutrients and carbon regulation is estimated at $22 trillion a year.

"We've lost a fifth of the world's coral reefs and 60 percent are under direct and immediate threat and climate change plays an additional role in driving reef loss," he said.

Tamelander said the decline in coastal ecosystems' health and productivity can be reversed by shifting to greener and more sustainable strategies, addressing threats and better management that involves all stakeholders.

"The sooner we act, the easier it will be and the longer we wait the harder it will be," he warned.

Drake Wrestles Tiger, Wows Fans In South Africa

'I went on a safari — I got tackled by a tiger!' Drake tells MTV News of his recent trip overseas.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sam Hendrick

Drake's Club Paradise Tour doesn't kick off until next month, but that hasn't stopped Drizzy from getting in some show dates. On Saturday, the Young Money soldier rocked the Bing Bar in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival, and in December, he took a couple of dates in South Africa. During his trip, Drake learned not to underestimate his overseas fans and ... to beware of tigers.

"Africa was amazing, man. Africa was amazing because I went, like, OK, I'm gonna have to do Rihanna 'What's My Name,' I'm gonna have to do 'Bedrock,' I'm gonna have to do 'Every Girl,' " Drake told MTV News of his planned playlist. "I went out there and I did the music that I thought they wanted to hear and all they were screaming was, like, they wanted to hear Take Care. They wanted to hear the new stuff."

Of course, Drizzy has a ton of solo hits like "Best I Ever Had," "Successful," "Over" and "Find Your Love." When you add in his high-powered collaborations with Rihanna, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, it all makes for a pretty impressive set list. Going into his African show dates, Drake didn't even consider the impact that his material from the November-released Take Care would have on fans.

"I started performing the new stuff and they knew it word for word," he said. "It was incredible. It was like 5,000 people."

Apparently people aren't the only ones to go crazy over the Toronto MC either: He has quite the effect on animals. "I went on a safari — I got tackled by a tiger!" he said. "It was crazy!"

We bet!

(AP) ? Andy Roddick's bid to win another Grand Slam singles title nearly a decade after his first hit a roadblock Thursday when a hamstring injury forced him out of the Australian Open.

The former No. 1, whose lone major singles win came at the 2003 U.S. Open, was trailing Lleyton Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 when he called the trainer to his courtside chair. He then walked over to Hewitt and shook the Australian player's hand.

Roddick had fallen to the court in the second set, but played despite being in obvious pain from the leg injury.

"It's a miserable, terrible thing being out there compromised like that," Roddick said of his attempt to play with the injury. "I wanted to see what I could do. You don't really have much time for clarity in that situation. He's a tough guy to play ... he knew what was going on."

Trailing 2-0 in the second set, Roddick moved suddenly to his right to retrieve a Hewitt forehand, and seemed to overstretch his right leg, rolling over on his right ankle. Hewitt won that point and the next two for a 3-0 lead, then Roddick took a medical timeout.

Hewitt said the injury was "a nightmare for both of us."

"Obviously, he stretched something," Hewitt said. "It's not easy for the person up the other end of the court. It's hard to concentrate when they're having injury timeouts.

"Andy's a great competitor ... he's similar to me. He plays with his heart on his sleeve, has that never-say-die attitude as well. It's never easy to play injured or to pull out of a match. It's not a good feeling."

Roddick looked lethargic in the second and third sets, rare chasing down shots and walking slowly between points with his head hanging down. He threw his racket into the wall at one point and argued with the chair umpire after a video replay showed that one of Hewitt's shots ? originally called out ? actually hit the line.

The 30-year-old Hewitt, who has won two major titles and was a finalist here in 2005, will play 21-year-old Milos Raonic of Canada in the third round.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced earlier Thursday, overcoming an early service break against Santiago Giraldo in a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory at Melbourne Park.

"I maybe started a little too defensive because he was hitting the ball very strong," said Djokovic, who won three of the four majors last year. "But then after, it was the other way around."

A title in Melbourne would put him in select company. Only four players ? Laver, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal ? have won three straight Grand Slam singles tournaments, and Djokovic could join them following his wins at last year's Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Second-seeded Nadal and third-seeded Federer, who are in the other half of the draw here, play back-to-back matches at Rod Laver Arena on Friday.

Earlier, five-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams notched her 500th career singles victory when she beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the third round. The left ankle she badly sprained two weeks ago wasn't an issue. However, near the end of the match, she tweak her other ankle and fell to the court.

"It's totally fine. It was my good ankle, so I'm good," she said.

Williams won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2010, but didn't defend her title in 2011 because she was injured.

Her older sister, Venus, has a win-loss record of 589-147, is sitting out the Australian Open because of an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

Serena is grateful to get her 500th win.

"I knew I had to get there too, because I do everything she does," Williams said of her sister's accomplishment. "It's great, it's like the ultimate."

Martina Navratilova had a career record 1,442-219, and Chris Evert retired with a 1,309-146 win-loss mark.

"I never will get there either, but it's really cool," Williams said. "Five hundred is a lot of matches to play, let alone to win."

Fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who lost to Djokovic in the final here last year, also advanced Thursday, beating Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. Murray is playing his first Grand Slam tournament since hiring eight-time major champion Ivan Lendl as his coach.

"It's been good, he's obviously one of the greatest players ever," Murray said. "He's got so much experience and he's a very funny guy. You wouldn't probably expect it by the way he was on the court, similar to myself."

With top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki having a day off, No. 2 Petra Kvitova moved into the third round with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Carla Suarez Navarro. Kvitova, who lost in the first round at the U.S. Open in the first major after winning Wimbledon, was down a service break in the third before recovering to beat the Spaniard.

"In the beginning it was OK, but I made many, many, many mistakes," Kvitova said of her 48 unforced errors. "It's part of my game but it's too many. It was very tough to get back in the third set."

Maria Sharapova, one of the three former champions in the women's draw, reached the third round after just two hours on court in two matches. The 2008 champion had a 6-0, 6-1 second-round win over U.S. qualifier Jamie Hampton in 64 minutes.

Sharapova did not play in any warmup events and spent nearly two weeks in Melbourne ahead of the season's first major while she rested an injured left ankle.

"It was more about getting my feet going," Sharapova said. "Yeah, started my preparations in the offseason a little late, took a bit of extra time in practice instead of rushing into a tournament."

She'll meet No. 30 Angelique Kerber, who beat Canada's Stephanie Dubois 7-5, 6-1.

Seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva, a two-time semifinalist at Melbourne Park, had a 6-1, 7-6 (3) over Lucie Hradecka. No. 21 Ana Ivanovic also advanced, beating Dutch player Michaella Krajicek 6-2, 6-3.

Ninth-seeded Marion Bartoli beat local hope and former quarterfinalist Jelena Dokic 6-3, 6-3 and No. 27 Maria Kirilenko of Russia topped Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat American Sloane Stephens 7-6 (6), 7-5.

Three seeded players were beaten: No. 23 Roberta Vinci lost to China's Zheng Jie, No. 29 Nadia Petrova fell to Sara Errani and No. 25 Kaia Kanepi lost to Ekaterina Makarova.

In the men's draw, sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost the 2008 final to Djokovic, advanced 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 over Ricardo Mello of Brazil, while No. 5 David Ferrer struggled early against American Ryan Sweeting before coming back to win 6-7 (4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic, No. 23 Milos Raonic of Canada, No. 24 Kei Nishikori of Japan and No. 27 Juan Ignacio Chela also progressed. Frenchman Michael Llodra beat No. 32 Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 and Portugal's Frederico Gil beat No. 26 Marcel Granollers in four sets.

In a night match, No. 14 Gael Monfils beat Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2 and will play Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazkakhstan in the third round. Kukushkin earlier beat No. 19 Viktor Troicki of Serbia 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

In an all-French match, Julien Benneteau beat 12th-seeded Gilles Simon 7-5, 7-6 (8), 1-6, 3-6, 6-2.

Pro golfer, swim coach arrested for soliciting child sex (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? A professional golfer was among 40 people arrested and charged in Florida with soliciting sex with children on the Internet during a week-long sting operation, authorities said on Wednesday.

Steve Thomas, 55, of Meridian, Mississippi, played 44 events on the Champions Tour, making one top 10 and two top 25 finishes, according to the Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour website.

Also arrested was Bryan Woodward, a 29-year-old coach for the private Gator Swim Club in Gainesville, Florida, who thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl while her parents were away on a cruise, according to the arrest affidavit.

After his arrest, Woodward told detectives that his job entailed coaching about 200 swimmers, most of them under the age of 18.

Thomas responded to a fake advertisement on the Internet offering "2 for 1 girls on vacation" and a "fun family intimate experience," according to his arrest affidavit.

In email exchanges with an undercover officer posing as a mother, Thomas was told the girl was a 13-year-old virgin, and he was sent a fake photograph of a young girl. Thomas responded by sending a picture of himself on the golf course, the arrest report states.

Thomas was arrested when he arrived at the rendezvous with three condoms, chocolate pudding and honey, the arrest report said. Thomas confirmed in a recorded statement to detectives that he came to have sex with a mother and a 13-year-old girl, according to the report.

Charges against Thomas and most of the other men included traveling to seduce a child to commit a sex act, use of a computer to induce a guardian to facilitate sex with a child, and attempted lewd and lascivious battery.

Sheriff spokeswoman Twis Lizasuain said Thomas, who was arrested January 12, and Woodward, who was arrested January 9, have been released from jail. A call to Thomas' cell phone went to voicemail and was not immediately returned. According to the Golf Channel, Thomas last played a full PGA schedule in 2009.

Woodward's phone has been disconnected. An email to the Gator Swim Club was not immediately returned.

Others arrested in the sting included an eighth grade teacher from Port St. Lucie, Florida, a soldier in the U.S. Army reserves, an engineer, a personal trainer, several college students and men from New York, New Jersey, Georgia and Alaska.

IMF seeks up to $500 billion in new funds (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The International Monetary Fund said Wednesday that it's aiming to increase its financial firepower by around $500 billion so it can give out new loans to help ease a worsening financial crisis.

Responding to speculation surrounding its funding requirements, the Washington-based institution said its staff estimates that countries around the world will need about $1 trillion in loans over the coming years. Most of the concerns center on the 17 nations that use the euro and their debt crisis.

Thanks to about $200 billion that European countries have promised to the IMF, it's more than one-third of its way to reaching its fund-raising goal.

The IMF has put up about a third of the financing of the eurozone's bailouts over the past two years. But there are growing worries that non-European countries will also need more help because of the worsening economic outlook.

Earlier, its sister organization, the World Bank, urged emerging countries to be ready for a severe global downturn if the crisis in the 17-nation eurozone intensifies.

The eurozone, in particular, has been pushing countries around the globe to give more funds to the IMF. The idea is to build up a larger firewall to stop the continent's debt troubles from spreading to large economies like Spain, Italy or even France.

But so far, even countries relatively flush with cash as China or Brazil have been reluctant to put up more money for Europe. The United States is also reluctant to increase the fund's resources.

Eswar Prasad, a former top IMF official who teaches economics at Cornell University, said emerging market countries may have started to see the need for such support because Europe's debt crisis has begun to cut into their exports. He said also that concern about possible European bond defaults is triggering a flight to safer bonds. That means less capital is flowing to emerging markets.

"There is a sense among many countries that the problems of Europe are beginning to wash up on their shores so some action must be taken," Prasad said.

Prasad expects the issue to be discussed Thursday at a meeting of deputy finance ministers for Group of 20 countries in Mexico City. But he doesn't expect a decision until the G-20 finance ministers meet Feb. 24-25 in Mexico City.

Nor does Prasad expect the Obama administration to change its position. He expects it will continue to oppose further U.S. support to the IMF.

"The United States is almost certainly not going to put any more money on the table," Prasad said. "Even if the administration wanted to do it, there is little chance they could get it through Congress."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday that the government would be prepared to back an increase but that he would require approval from his Parliament.

"We believe the IMF must always lend to countries, not to currencies," Cameron said at a news conference with Italian Premier Mario Monti. "We would only act if that was with others, not just as part of a eurozone measure.

But Cameron said it's up to the eurozone itself to prove that it's "standing behind its own currency."

Monti said British taxpayers wouldn't have to pay for Italy's economic woes.

"To my knowledge, my country has not cost a penny to the U.K.," Monti said. "I don't see a reason why this should change in the future."

How the IMF's fund-raising goal will be reached is set to be discussed at a meeting of finance ministers of the Group of 20 leading economies in Mexico next month.

Clearing vegetation close to houses is the best way to reduce impacts of severe bushfires, according to a team of scientists from Australia and the USA who examined house loss after as a result of Black Saturday, when a series of fires raged across the Australian state of Victoria, killing 173 and injuring 414.

The research involving 12,000 measurements at 500 houses affected by the Black Saturday fires was only made possible by the sheer size of the devastation of February 7, 2009.

"More than any other major wildfire in Australia, Black Saturday provided an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the effects of land management on house loss," said senior author Dr Philip Gibbons from The Australian National University.

The research team found that fuel reduction close to houses afforded the greatest protection.

"Clearing trees and shrubs within 40 meters of houses was the most effective form of fuel reduction on Black Saturday," said Dr Gibbons.

"However, there was less risk to houses from vegetation in planted gardens compared with vegetation in remnant native bushland."

Houses close to public forest were at greater risk, but concerns raised after Black Saturday about national parks were not reflected in the results.

"On Black Saturday, houses were at similar risk whether they were adjacent to National Park or State Forest," said Professor David Lindenmayer from ANU, a co-author of the research.

Logging native forests did not reduce the chance of house loss.

"We found no significant relationship between house loss and the amount of logging in the landscape," said Professor Ross Bradstock from The University of Wollongong who was an expert witness in the Bushfires Royal Commission.

A key issue after Black Saturday was prescribed burning. However, the researchers found that protection afforded to houses by prescribed burning on Black Saturday was only modest, despite the team examining landscapes that had been burnt considerably before Black Saturday.

"Clearing vegetation within 40 meters of houses was twice as effective as prescribed burning," said Dr Geoff Cary from ANU.

All forms of fuel reduction examined in the study, including prescribed burning, were most effective if undertaken closer to houses, .

Bbut the research team cautions that reducing fuel close to houses is not always an appropriate strategy.

"Intensive fuel reduction close to houses can be expensive, can have significant environmental and aesthetic impacts and can be risky in some circumstances," said Dr Gibbons.

"Many of these issues can be avoided if new housing is not permitted adjacent to forests."

The researchers conclude that fuel reduction close to houses is only a partial solution to bushfires.

"No amount of fuel reduction will guarantee that a house is safe on extreme weather days like Black Saturday, so it is critical that other measures, such as early evacuation, safer places and architectural solutions are considered by every resident in fire-prone areas in addition to, or instead of, fuel reduction," said Dr Gibbons.

"These are findings that are probably important internationally," said Dr Max Moritz from the University of California at Berkeley who was a co-author of the research.

"Housing density in many bushfire-prone regions is increasing, so the next major bushfire will be even more devastating unless we continue to learn from Black Saturday," added Dr Gibbons.
