Ann Arbor Firm Helps Analyze Lethal, Castration-Resistant Prostate ...
ANN ARBOR ? A new study by researchers from the University of Michigan, Yale School of Public Health, Brown University and Ann Arbor-based Compendia Bioscience provided a comprehensive genomic profiling of patients with pre-treated lethal metastatic prostate cancer, providing insights into mechanisms of resistance.
The study, published in the scientific journal Nature, identified a diverse series of likely driving mutations and copy number alterations in both known and novel genes. Oncomine streamlined analysis of genome alterations and provided a platform for rapid validation across previously published studies.
?The Oncomine?tool set was developed to mine the global collection of cancer genomic data ? our most recent advances focusing on mutation and copy number analysis. It is always rewarding to see our platform contributing to scientific discovery,? said Dr. Daniel Rhodes, CEO of Compendia Bioscience.
Integrated analysis of copy number and mutation data identified loss of CHD1, a chromatin-modifying enzyme, as a key genetic event in ETS-negative prostate cancer. With Oncomine, the team was able to rapidly validate this observation across 13 independent, previously published patient cohorts.
?Oncomine?continues to be my go-to reference database to analyze and validate cancer genomic findings,? said Dr. Scott Tomlins, senior author of the study. ?The latest advances in mutation and copy number analysis are quite powerful and the ability to quickly and easily compare multiple data sets is unmatched.?
Compendia Bioscience is dedicated to curing cancers through the application of genomic data by providing researchers with the data and analysis tools necessary to validate biomarker and gene target discoveries, better understand mechanisms of disease, and optimize clinical outcomes. Visit www.compendiabio.com for more information.
Oncomine?combines a rapidly growing compendium of more than 62,000 expertly curated cancer genomic profiles with a sophisticated analysis engine and a powerful web application for data mining and visualization. Oncomine facilitates target discovery and validation and supports the prioritization of tumor populations for drug development. Visit www.oncomine.com for more information.

Minecraft mod adds programmable 8-bit computer, lacks cassette deck (video)
Never one to focus exclusively on the very latest hardware, a new mod has brought an 6502 microprocessor to a Minecraft world near you. The system is made from three separate cubes, representing the CPU, monitor and disk drive, respectively, all connected by ribbon cables. Part of pre-release 5 of the RedPower 2 mod, programmer Eloraam has also thrown in pumps and solar panels to keep crafters busy -- you're no longer limited to light switches. The emulated 8-bit processor can interact with other Minecraft blocks and while the computer can be programmed alone, its creator has been kind enough to include a Forth interpreter alongside the hardware, for those looking to get a little more involved. Such types can also skip over the break for an intense 23-minute tutorial on the mod.

news: Conservative politics in the current united states of america ...
The basic tenets of conservative politics were first writ by the philosopher John Locke, an english philosopher and physician who's considered by many to be one of the founding fathers of modern thought. Locke was an atheist who believed in the supremacy of secular humanism - in other words, he believed that if humans were allowed to proceed unencumbered through life by either theocratic superstition or governmental interference, that we could achieve our greatest potential as citizens of the world. His theories were influential from Russia to the Americas, and had a profound impact upon the founding fathers of the united states, with special notation for his contributions to liberal theory.
And that's the funny part: Conservative politics have their roots in liberal theory. Conservatism as it is now, of course, is not Locke's conservatism at all, but that kind of irony tends to be lost on people who consider themselves conservatives.
Conservative politics these days are vastly different from Locke's liberal theory, though of course most conservatives still pay lip service to the notion of non-interference from government interest. Of course, they do so for a different reason. Locke's motivation was to produce a free and unencumbered people able to proceed through life on and by their own means, repressed by none and free to communicate with all.
Conservative politics today, on the other hand, focus on a lack of governmental interference in order to maintain the stratification of the classes. Government policies as a whole tend to be aimed toward things that will help the working and middle classes - stuff like jobs programs, health care, welfare, unemployment benefits and the like. These programs are pricy, but on balance they more than pay for themselves by providing jobs and training and helping the underclass gain some sort of enfranchisement.
Conservative politics tend to say they oppose that - and all government spending - in principle. However, you'll find very few conservatives who oppose military spending, the bank bailout, or other governmental programs that favor big business. So they're clearly not in tune with the principles that Locke put forth. They merely pick and choose the talking points that most favor themselves for their upcoming campaigns.
And that's without even touching Locke's other premise - that religion is superstition and god is a crutch used to oppress the working class. If you can find a single conservative in modern America who held those views, you'd have found literally one-in-a-million.

ROME (AP) ? Serena Williams withdrew from the Italian Open with a lower back injury shortly before she was scheduled to meet French Open champion Li Na in the semifinals on Saturday.
Williams said the problem also affected her earlier this week.
"It was feeling a little stiff and I don't think this is the right moment to force (it)," she said. "I just want to relax and get ready for the next few months."
The withdrawal comes eight days before the French Open, but Williams said the move was mainly precautionary and that she'll be ready for the clay-court major.
"This is a good week to get better and I'm confident that I'll be 100 percent," she said.
The decision ended Williams' winning streak at 17 matches. She had won consecutive titles in Charleston, South Carolina, and Madrid, plus two matches in Fed Cup.
In the Rome final, Li will face either defending champion Maria Sharapova or 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany, who were playing later.
The men's semifinals feature five-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer and top-ranked Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer.
Several other players are also nursing injuries.
Fourth-ranked Andy Murray skipped last week's Madrid Open with a back problem and said it was still affecting him after a three-set loss to Richard Gasquet in the third round this week.
Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was bothered by an abdominal injury in a three-set loss to Kerber in the quarterfinals. And Italy's Flavia Pennetta retired with a right wrist injury while trailing Williams 4-0 in the first set Friday.

Locating Quick Products For Outsourcing Results | Honest Reviews ...
A vital element that has become a part of operating a successful Internet business these days is outsourcing. Being triumphant in the growth of business is something that many of the most well known Internet marketers and wepreneurs are experiencing. Outsourcing is not the most recent thing being put to use by multi-national corporations, in face it has been around for quite awhile. But due to the advent of the Internet, anyone with a formidable budget can begin to outsource his business tasks. So the question that comes about in this situation is what do you need to do in order to be certain of success with outsourcing? Within this article, we will be talking about some hints for understanding outsourcing.
One thing you should keep in mind is that outsourcing is money that you?re investing for future returns, not money you?re spending on something frivolous. You may be wary of outsourcing because you see it as an expense that you can?t afford.
Yet, it can actually be a way to save money if you do it right. Outsourcing frees up your time which helps you expand your business. When you handle everything yourself, there?s little time left over to think creatively or productively. When you outsource intelligently, then, it?s money well spent that will enable you to focus on your long term goals. One blunder that a lot of online marketers happen to make is that they pick out a vendor, based entirely on their price. While it is not a bad thing to pay attention to your investments and saving money, you should not close your eyes to the other stuff also. If you find a vendor with a good track record, then go for him even if the price is a bit more. If you are going to invest in an asset, then make it in the proper location. It does not take much to be stuck on a vendor who costs less. Although you should be focused on every single factor, including the how much it costs.
Don?t panic or get discouraged if you find that you made a mistake or overlooked something. Even experienced marketers make the occasional mistake, so don?t be too hard on yourself. This isn?t a sign that you should quit, only that you should minimize your losses and move on. Anytime you make a mistake, see what can be learned from it and you?ll emerge wiser than you were before. This is the only way you?ll be able to keep up your outsourcing adventures and ensure that you get the best return on investment. There?s really no such thing as failure unless you decide to quit.
There are all kinds of benefits to outsourcing. Outsourcing if often preferable than hiring employees for your business. It?s often surprisingly reasonable to outsource some of your most tedious daily tasks. At the same time, a larger budget will enable you to afford the services of more professional and experienced freelancers. If you?re looking for the best possible vendors, then, you have to be ready to pay their rates. Outsourcing can become a real boon to any business, so it?s something you should take advantage of.

Olympics 2012: DA launches GoLeboGo social ... - Newsroom - DA
Winston Rabotapi, DA Spokesperson on Sport and Recreation
18 May 2012
Today the DA has launched a social media campaign to support Olympic hopeful, Lebogang Moeng, in his efforts to attain sufficient funding for the Olympic games and qualifiers.
Lebogang, the South African 400 m champion, is one of 11 athletes who reached Olympic qualifying standards in their events during the Yellow Pages series. The eleven athletes received R200 000 from Athletics South Africa (ASA) for reaching the qualifying standards, amounting to roughly R18 000 per athlete.
It was initially reported that ASA would be responsible for the athletes? flights, their accommodation and their kit. Food, transport to and from basecamps, and other amenities would have to be funded by the athletes themselves. It is estimated that each athlete will incur at least R15 000 in costs not covered by the current funding programme.
Lebogang has to depart to Europe tomorrow to participate in international qualifying races.
We have already submitted parliamentary questions to the Minister of Sports & Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, to ascertain how funds allocated to Team SA were used.
The Department of Sports and Recreation has allocated R31 million to preparing Team SA for the Olympics, a contribution of R70 million was made by the National Lottery and, according to a reply received from the Minister of Sports and Recreation today, R45 million has been made available by the private sector. Sport and recreation service providers (mainly national federations) also received a total budget of R132.5 million this year, a portion of which must surely be used to support Olympians in the various sporting codes.
If athletes are now unable to fund their trips, how was this money used?
The 22-year-old Lebogang, who grew up in Ganyesa in the North West, said that his only wish is ?to be successful and to come home with an Olympic medal.? The Olympic hopes of Lebogang Moeng and other South African athletes should not be compromised by a lack of funding.
We must make sure that our sporting ambassadors have the funding and support they need to succeed.
The DA GoLeboGo campaign on both Twitter and Facebook also includes Lebogang?s account details for anyone seeking to make a contribution to his cause.

Over 7,000 Elsevier books now accessible through HINARI, AGORA, OARE, and ARDI
London, May 16, 2012 - Research4Life partners announced today that the content available through its collaborative public-private partnership has dramatically increased since 2011 to reach 17,000 peer reviewed scientific journals, books and databases. Research4Life provides over 6,000 institutions in more than 100 developing countries with free or low cost access to peer-reviewed online content from the world's leading scientific, technical and medical publishers. The recent sharp increase in content is primarily a result of Elsevier's contribution of 7,000 books in 2011-2.
The inclusion of Elsevier's entire SciVerse ScienceDirect ebook collection follows the publisher's incremental contributions of 1,700 clinical and science and technology books in 2011. One of the founding members of Research4Life, Elsevier also makes available over 2,000 electronic journals and SciVerse Scopus, an abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature with over 19,500 titles from 5,000 publishers. In 2006 publishers began pioneering the addition of ebooks to Research4Life, including ebook contributions from American Psychiatric Publishing Inc., Oxford University Press, the Worldwatch Institute, CABI, and most recently, John Wiley and Sons who made their Current Protocol book series available through HINARI in 2011.
"The developing world benefits enormously from the online book collections made available by our publisher partners. The new content is a significant addition, more than doubling Research4Life's information resources previously accessible to researchers and practitioners in low- and middle-income countries," said Kimberly Parker, HINARI Programme Manager.
One of the beneficiaries of Research4life, Dr. Patrick Kyamanywa, Dean, Faculty of Medicine National University of Rwanda, welcomes this significant expansion of the initiative's ebook content explaining, "A culture of evidence-based practice can no longer be an option but the rule. The publishers involved in the HINARI project should be praised for their commitment to improving access to information to students, researchers and practitioners in some of the poorest countries in the world. Elsevier appears to be leading the way and our hope is that other publishers will follow suit and help achieve the target of 'Health Information For All by 2015'."

Throwing starfish into the ocean..... - Was this in the plan???? - Yes
I bought myself this necklace this week, I had just picked Daisy up from an overnight respite stay at Shooting Star Chase and dropped her off to school and I was in town picking up some bits I needed when I saw this necklace in a window, and I had to have it.
It wasn't that I wanted to treat myself to something pretty, it was the starfish that drew my attention. ?I have always loved starfish, they have a special significance in my life. ?I remember happy family holidays on the Gower Peninsula in Wales rockpooling with my Dad and finding starfish and anenomes and sea urchins and taking our sea treasure home to look up the names and species in my Spotters Guide to Wildlife Book.
Many years later Starfish became symbolic to me when we ended up on the neurology ward at Great Ormond Street. ?At that time the neurology long stay ward was called Starfish and Daisy had been transferred there following a stay in intensive care as there was a concern at that point that her condition was neurodegenerative. ?We had already been in GOS for over a month and this was our third ward with yet another speciality becoming involved. ?
On the wall of the ward was a beautifully illustrated picture of a boy throwing a starfish into the sea, and next to it was this story:
Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don?t throw them in, they?ll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can?t possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one!"
1n 1982 the world's first children's hospice opened its door. ?Located near Oxford the idea for a children's hospice?sprang from the friendship between Sister Frances Dominica and the parents of a seriously ill little girl called Helen who lived at home with her family but required 24 hour care. Helen House offered a home from home for children with life-limiting conditions and provided care and support for the child and family at the end life. ?From this one model there are now over 40 operational hospice services in the UK supporting thousands of families. ?I like to think of Sister Frances Dominica as being like the boy on the beach, she was not able to help every child but she has made a difference to so many and through her example others have followed.
It is so easy to say, "I can't be bothered", "It won't make a difference", "Well, I can't help everyone", but in little ways we can all make a difference. ?Luke Tillen and Vikki George are also people who refuse to give up when people tell them the task is too immense for them to make an impact;
Luke founded a Charity called Torbay Holiday Helper's Network, it provides free holidays to Devon for families of seriously ill children and bereaved families. ?Luke doesn't have a disabled child, or as far as I know have any experience of caring for a disabled child but he had the idea to set up the charity in 2009 after watching the TV programme "The Secret Millionaire". ?Luke is not a millionaire, but he had a lot of contacts in the Torbay area of Devon and he developed an idea that has grown and grown.
Similarly, Vikki George runs a charity called PostPals, they help brighten the days of sick and seriously ill children by sending them post and gifts via a network of volunteers.Vikki is bed-bound with severe ME but she has not let her own illness prevent her from thinking of others.
I bought myself the starfish necklace to remind myself of this story which has so much resonance with me. ?Yes, I have a busy life, yes, I probably have less time than the average mother, but, I can, in my own way make a difference. ?Sister Helen Domenica's ?work has inspired a whole movement. ?As you all know our own hospice, ShootingStar Chase, is our lifeline. ?The spare time I have in my life is devoted to helping promote their work and fundraise for them, so at least 3 times a week I pull on my running shoes and pound the streets to train up for the 7 race challenge I am undertaking for them. ?Sunday 27th May is race 3, the Bupa London 10K.
Like the boy on the beach, like Sister Frances, like Luke, like Vikki, we can all make a difference.....

Kaspersky exec calls Mac OS 'really vulnerable' (update: clarification from Kaspersky)
The Macintosh is an impenetrable fortress of malware-free computing, right? In recent years, we've certainly seen that image eroded a bit, thanks to a number of nasty outbreaks. And if you listen to Nikolay Grebennikov, the CTO of security software maker Kaspersky, things have the potential to be much worse. The executive told British site Computing that the company was invited to improve Cupertino's security, only to discover that, "Mac OS is really vulnerable." Grebennikov also had some rather unfortunate news for all the iPad and iPhone owners out there, telling the site, "Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS."
Update: So, this is turning into a whole "he said, they pubbed" situation. We reached out to Kaspersky earlier and just received a comment from the security company, which claims that the whole thing was simply taken out of context. Here's the statement. It's a doozy.
On Monday, April 14, computing.co.uk published an article titled "Apple OS 'really vulnerable' claims Kaspersky Lab CTO" that includes an inaccurate quote regarding Apple and Kaspersky Lab. The article reports that Kaspersky Lab had "begun the process of analyzing the Mac OS platform at Apple's request" to identify vulnerabilities. This statement was taken out of context by the magazine - Apple did not invite or solicit Kaspersky Lab's assistance in analyzing the Mac OS X platform. Kaspersky Lab has contacted computing.co.uk to correct its article.
Please refer to the statement below from Nikolay Grebennikov, Chief Technology Officer, Kaspersky Lab, which clarifies this misrepresentation:
"As Mac OS X market share continues to increase, we expect cyber-criminals to continue to develop new types of malware and attack methods. In order to meet these new threats, Kaspersky Lab has been conducting an in-depth analysis of Mac OS X vulnerabilities and new forms of malware.
This security analysis of Mac OS X was conducted independently of Apple; however, Apple is open to collaborating with us regarding new Mac OS X vulnerabilities and malware that we identify during our analysis. Kaspersky Lab is committed to providing the highest level of security for all of our customers, including Mac OS X, and we will continue to enhance our technologies in order to meet the ever-changing threat landscape. "

NEC tablet with GSM and HSPA breaks cover at the FCC
Regular readers will know that the FCC is a bit of a virtual whistle-blower, alerting tech-hungry Americans to when new goodies might soon be landing on their shores. Other times it coughs up the odd thing we weren't even waiting for. Today's offering appears to be a 3G tablet from NEC. There's little in the way of specification, or even pictures, but we do know it's sporting GSM and HSPA radios along with the standard WiFi. The device measures 222.6 mm across, which strongly points to a display somewhere in the 7-inch region. The KMP7R4D1-1A model number isn't ringing any bells right now, but we do remember a few Japanese models that bear a passing resemblance not that long ago.
