Twitter UK promises more protection from online threats, showing Facebook how it's done

Take note, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg:?the head of Twitter UK publicly apologized on Saturday to a group of women who have been the target of death and rape threats from twitter users, and announced it would make it easier for users to report abusive tweets.

?I personally apologise to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through,? Twitter UK general manager Tony Wang said in a tweet. The company came under fire after critics said its initial response to the threats wasn't enough.?

?The abuse they?ve received is simply not acceptable. It?s not acceptable in the real world, and it?s not acceptable on Twitter,? he said.

Over the past few hours, Wang has sent out a flurry of tweets thanking people for their feedback and sending updates about new policy changes that will make it easier for people to respond to online threats.?

Twitter updated its rules and confirmed it would introduce a "report abuse" button on all platforms, including desktops.

UK police are currently investigating eight allegations of abuse including bomb and rape threats made against women.

To date, two people have been arrested for making rape threats against British MP Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, who received the threats after a campaign to have Jane Austen put on the new ?10 banknote.

Female journalists were targeted as well:The?Guardian's?Hadley Freeman,?Time?magazine's Catherine Mayer and?the?Independent's Grace Dent all allegedly received bomb threats on Wednesday.

Mayor, who had sent in a complaint to Wang on Wednesday, bristled at the fact that she hadn't received a personal apology, saying she was?"deeply amused" by Wang's tweets. Some suggest Twitter should have taken action much sooner, and not only after some high-profile women spoke out against threats.?

But Twitter UK's apology presents a contrast from Facebook's sluggish response to reported death and rape threats, as well as racist, misogynistic and homophobic pages.

In the case of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd, who committed suicide at age 15, after a sexual predator created a Facebook page featuring a topless photo of Todd which he obtained when she was 13. Threats to Todd through Facebook messages continued over two years, and?Facebook pages bullying Todd continue to exist?nine months after her death, despite numerous activists groups urging their removal.

Parents of both Todd and?Rehtaeh Parsons -- a 17-year-old Nova Scotia teen who committed suicide after harassment on social media after photos from her alleged gang rape were distributed -- ?have dismissed Facebook's recent policy changes, which allow "controversial" pages bullying the deceased to remain online.?

California city sues Chevron over refinery fire

(AP) ? Richmond is suing Chevron for damages from a massive fire that shut down the energy giant's refinery at the San Francisco Bay area city last year.

A lawsuit filed in Contra Costa County Superior Court Friday alleges the crude-oil pipeline leak that led to the Aug. 6 fire was the result of "years of neglect, lax oversight and corporate indifference to necessary safety inspection and repairs."

The city is seeking unspecified damages, including compensation for emergency response to the fire, environmental cleanup and loss of property values.

Chevron said in a statement that the lawsuit had no merit.

Both Chevron and government investigations have determined that corrosion in a pipe caused a leak that sparked the fire, sending a plume of black smoke over nearby areas.

Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin said the City Council voted to sue after months of negotiations with Chevron failed to reach an agreement.

France to Cut Defense Jobs, Hold Line on Spending

France plans to hold the line on military spending while reducing 34,000 defense jobs over the next five years, a decision the defense minister said would still allow the country to prepare for the future.

President Francois Hollande's Socialist government laid out its five-year military program at a Cabinet meeting on Friday that would keep annual defense spending at 31.4 billion euros through 2016 ? then rising to 32.5 billion euros by 2019. Key NATO ally France would remain Western Europe's second-biggest spender on defense after Britain.

The plan goes before Parliament this fall. Socialists and their allies control both chambers.

Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told Europe-1 radio the plan avoids "drastic cuts." It does cut back on planned purchases of Dassault's Rafale fighter jet to about 5 per year through 2019 ? down from 11 previously.

The government is counting on export orders to sustain production. The Rafale, introduced in 2001, has never been exported. But Le Drian was optimistic about its future outside France, including in Qatar and India, which is in exclusive talks for the purchase of 126 Rafale jetfighters.

The minister said the five-year program allows France to "prepare the French army's adaptation to risks of the future and new threats for the coming six years."

However, there were some critics of the cuts in manpower.

"To win the war always means to control territory ? on the ground, in the air and at sea ? and at some point ... numbers count," Gen. Vincent Desportes, former head of the Armed Forces Defense College, said on France-Info radio. "Technology only very partially replaces cuts."

He said he fears a diminished ability to intervene, as France did this year in Mali, leading an African force to chase out Islamist jihadists in the country's north.

"In my opinion, France won't be able to address its international responsibilities and protect French interests", he said.

The government earmarked an average of 17.1 billion euros a year earmarked for equipment spending. For the first time, France plans to take delivery of 12 armed, long endurance drones ? the U.S. system MQ-9 Reaper ? and 14 shorter range tactical drones. Included in the budget is the purchase of 12 Airbus-made refueling planes, with the first two delivered in 2019.

During its intervention in Mali, France relied on U.S. drones and refueling planes.

By 2019, the French air force should also receive 15 A400M military transport planes from Airbus ? the first one entering service this week ? and one Barracuda attack submarine made by the French naval company DCNS.

For its intelligence services, France is looking to an electronics-intelligence satellite system known as CERES to be placed into orbit in 2020, and on two MUSIS satellites (Multinational Space-based Imaging System for Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Observation) from a European program that includes Italy Belgium, Germany, Greece, and Spain. That should be operational in 2017.

"Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation? It's possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys."

The comedian and actress came out in November 2008 <a href="http://thestrippodcast.blogspot.com/2008/11/wanda-sykes-lv-gay-rally-im-proud-to-be.html" target="_hplink">while speaking at an anti-Prop 8 rally</a> in Las Vegas. Sykes said in part: <blockquote>"I got married Oct. 25, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation, I felt like I was living my life, I wasn't in the closet, but I was just living my life. Everybody who knows me personally, they know I'm gay. And that's the way people should be able to live our lives, really. We shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something we automatically should have as citizens of this country."</blockquote>

Later, while on "The View", Pierce spoke about Hargrove and his sexuality and said,"What you choose to talk about yourself is a personal decision."

  • T.R. Knight, 2007

<a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20008737,00.html">T.R. Knight's coming out</a> wasn't necessarily ideal. The actor, who played George O'Malley on ABC's <em>Grey's Anatomy</em>, was called a "faggot" by co-star Isaiah Washington, prompting Knight to stand up for himself and others. He told Ellen DeGeneres, "I've never been called that to my face. So I think when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself."

Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships. So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love." </blockquote>

  • Lance Bass, 2006

When asked why he decided to come out then, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1219142,00.html" target="_hplink">Bass said</a>, "The main reason I wanted to speak my mind was that (the rumors) really were starting to affect my daily life. Now it feels like it's on my terms. I'm at peace with my family, my friends, myself and God so there's really nothing else that I worry about."

In the issue, the 56-year-old Emmy- and Tony-winner said, "It's never been something I kept a secret." But Matthew Shepard's murder led the actor to publicly coming out. "It was like somebody slapped me awake," Lane said. "At this point it's selfish not to do whatever you can."

  • George Michael, 1998

After being caught performing a "lewd act" in a public restroom, Michael came out to CNN in April 1998. <a href="http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/9804/11/george.michael/" target="_hplink">Michael said</a>, "This is as good of a time as any... I want to say that I have no problem with people knowing that I'm in a relationship with a man right now. I have not been in a relationship with a woman for almost 10 years." Later that year Michael spoofed the incident in the music video for his single "Outside."

  • Ellen DeGeneres, 1997

And a big cheer went up through the whole hall, and k.d. [lang] came out and hugged me. I remember walking back, and my friend said, 'I think you came out!'"</blockquote>

Following a report from yesterday that appeared to show photos of the iPad 5's silver rear shell, FanaticFone has posted new photos of the alleged silver casing of the next generation iPad mini. While the photos highlight typical features such as a rear facing camera, speakers and the Lightning port, it does feature an embedded black Apple logo, which is a change from the current iPad mini that uses a printed mirrored logo.

Texas Execution: Douglas Feldman Put To Death

A former financial analyst has been executed for the shooting deaths of two truck drivers in Texas 15 years ago.

Douglas Feldman, 55, received lethal injection for gunning down Robert Everett and Nicholas Valesquez during a fit of road rage in 1998.

Feldman died 13 minutes after the lethal drug was injected at 6:28 pm local time.

Before his death, he mimicked the announcement a judge or jury makes when announcing a verdict, declaring he had found the victims guilty of crimes against him.

"I have sentenced them both to death. I personally carried out their executions," he said in a loud voice, adding that he carried out their executions in August 1998.

"As of that time, the state of Texas has been holding me illegally in confinement and by force for 15 years.

"I hereby protest my pending execution and demand immediate relief."

John Everett witnessed the execution of his brother's killer.

"His statement just showed more of the heart of the man," Mr Everett said.

"Very dark and very evil and very unremorseful."

Feldman's attorney, Robin Norris, filed a clemency petition with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles that was turned down on Monday.

Feldman, from Richardson, was riding his motorcycle the night of August 24, 1998, and said Everett cut him off on a Dallas highway so he took out his gun, pulled up alongside the truck and shot him.

Feldman testified at his capital murder trial that he was still angry about 45 minutes later when he spotted Valesquez, a gas tanker driver, at a Dallas service station and shot him.

"A security camera catches him shooting the man in cold blood," Jason January, the former Dallas County assistant district attorney who prosecuted him, said.

"Several counties were frightened as this unidentified motorcyclist was out acting like 'The Terminator'."

Feldman was arrested more than a week later, after shooting and wounding a man at a fast food outlet and driving off.

New report: Gitmo costs U.S. $2.7 million per prisoner

The United States government spends about $2.7 million per prisoner per year to operate the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, the Washington Post reports.

That estimate comes from a recent study by the Miami Herald?s Carol Rosenberg, who has covered Gitmo since 2002. According to Rosenberg, the U.S. will spend $454 million this year to maintain the facility and pay troop salaries, among other fees ? a little under half a billion dollars.

With only 166 prisoners, that works out to an annual cost of about $2.7 million per detainee. For a point of comparison, California spends an annual $47,000 per prisoner, according to a 2010 study from that state?s government.

According to the Post, Rosenberg?s study serves as a reminder of the tremendous cost and inefficiency of running Gitmo and why the detention facility has been such a thorn in the side of the Obama administration.

In January 2009, President Barack Obama issued an executive order to close the camp, but the process has been stymied at every turn by a veritable Gordian knot of political and legal obstacles as well as national security concerns. Finding a place to put the prisoners if Gitmo were shuttered has been a contentious issue in both domestic politics and international diplomacy.

?I think for a lot of Americans, the notion is out of sight, out of mind,? Obama said at a press conference in April, insisting he would resume efforts to close the prison. ?I?m going to go back at it because I think it?s important.?

If You Are The Forces That RECEIVED THE VALUABLES From These Striking Low Skilled / Low Pay Workers After Promising Them STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT That Did Not Come - WOULD YOU STAND OPPOSED TO THEIR EFFORTS - Or ECHO THEM - Knowing That They WILL LOOK PAST YOUR FAILURES, Turing It Into APPRECIATION?

Why is it that Tamron Hall of MSNBC can't bring herself to note that these are the people who would be "Factory Workers" - the REPLACEMENT WORK after the industrial jobs left BUT THE PROGRESSIVES GAINED DOMINATE POWER IN OUR BIG CITIES are now "McJobs".

Someone please explain to me why INDUSTRIALISTS are expected to PRODUCE JOBS but the PROGRESSIVES who retain the loyalties of THE LEAST OF THESE, now controlling these MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ZONES are excused from their failure to create SKILLED JOBS commensurate with the demands for goods and services that the marketplace that they have political control over.

When You Don't Capture All Of The VALUABLES That Have Been Transacted Over Time - YOU CAN'T HELP But To Believe That Those Who GIVE "The Least Of These" A VOICE TODAY - Should Be THANKED Rather Than Have A RETRAINING ORDER Placed Upon Them For Their Previous Theft.

Grange: From hype to hope for Canada Basketball

Toronto ? The buzz has been building for years, starting as names like Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph, Andrew Wiggins and many more got whispered about, Tweeted about, YouTubed and ranked when they were in their early teens.

    Canada is coming.

The buzz got a jolt just over a year ago when Steve Nash came on board with Canada Basketball as the general manager of men?s senior national team. The hum got louder when Anthony Bennett became the first Canadian to be taken first overall in the NBA draft last month and Wiggins became the most talked about non-NBA player in the world this past year and the leading candidate to be the No.1 pick in the NBA draft in 2014.

Sports Illustrated noticed. ESPN has noticed. The world has noticed.

?This really is the Golden Age of Canadian basketball,? said Nash on Monday as he and his hand-picked head coach Jay Triano announced the 18-man training camp roster for the first team that will compete for Canada internationally since he took charge of the senior men?s team last May. ?We?re thriving. We have talent, potential and depth at every age group.?

On Friday arguably the most gifted group of Canadian basketball players yet assembled ? true even despite a few key absences ? will begin training camp to prepare for the FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas, Venezuela August 30th ? Sept. 11th.

Canada is coming, there is no questioning that. The question of course is when and where exactly Canada will end up and how to keep the pot simmering without turning the heat up too high or too soon.

Now, finally, the hype hits the floor, and everyone will get to find out if the Golden Age will translate into an international medal of any kind ? it?s been a while, after all.

The Canadian senior men?s team won silver at the 1936 Olympics, the first time basketball was included. Fair to say the international talent pool has gotten deeper in the past 80 years.

Canada?s best result at a major global competition since is a fourth place finish at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and again at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where the field was weakened by the Eastern Bloc boycott. Canadian men last appeared in the Olympics in 2000 when Nash was still playing for the team and Triano was in his first stint as coach. Their most recent World Championship result was 22nd out of 24 teams in 2010. There is nowhere to go but up.

A top-four finish is required for Canada to qualify for the World Championships in Spain next summer ? considered a key step in getting a young Canadian team crucial international experience in advance of the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Efforts are being made to keep things in perspective ? the 2018 Worlds or 2020 Olympics are better bets for a Canadian podium appearance given how young Canada?s best projected players are now ? but that will only get harder as more NBA talent comes on stream.

?We?re desperate to qualify (for the Worlds next summer) but we may not,? says Nash. ?But no matter what we have to stick to the plan and the plan is to develop our players, to form a chemistry, to give them experience at an international level and the best way to do that is to qualify and give them another experience next summer.

?But the truth is it?s going to be a real challenge (this summer),? Nash said. ?We have a very young team, a team without a lot of international experience and a team with very little experience playing together.?

Nash is right. Canada may not qualify this summer and focusing on the process and the longer term goals for the program is sound thinking.

The only problem in his logic is that Canada should qualify for the Worlds this summer and failing to do so would be a considerable sideways step, if not a backwards one for the program. Part of Nash?s job is raise private money for the program, an easier task if momentum is building. Playing next summer means more experience sooner for young players that badly need it and badly need to play together. The powerhouse USA won?t be at the tournament as they have already qualified for the Worlds. Stalwarts such as Argentina and Brazil having aging cores and won?t be sending many of their top players. The field is open.

Among the 18 players invited to training camp are four players who will be on NBA rosters in the 2013-14 season ? Thompson, the emerging power forward with the Cleveland Cavaliers; Joseph who backed up Tony Parker with the San Antonio Spurs on their run to the NBA Finals; veteran reserve big Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat and Andrew Nicholson who just finished his rookie season with the Orlando Magic. Two others ? Andy Rautins and Kris Joseph have recent NBA experience while the likes of Carl English, Levon Kendall and Jermaine Anderson are veteran pros with experience in top leagues in Europe and competing for Canada overseas.

It?s the foundation of a pretty good team, at least on paper.

?Back in 2000 we had two NBA players ? we had Steve and we had (since retired) Todd MacCulloch and we were like, ?man, these guys are great? and we built around them,? said Triano, who helped coach that group to a 5-2 record in Sydney and within a whisker of a medal. ?Now we have so many other options. The depth in our country is great.?

It would greater still if Bennett, the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers wasn?t recuperating from shoulder surgery, Kelly Olynyk of the Boston Celtics, taken 13th overall, wasn?t on the shelf with plantar fasciitis, Los Angeles Lakers centre Robert Sacre hadn?t declined an invitation to camp and Wiggins, the 18-year-old phenom set to attend the University of Kansas, hadn?t decided to use the summer to get ready for college and his push to justify projections that have him going first overall next season.

It should make for a competitive training camp in advance of exhibition games against Jamaica on August 8th and 10th in Toronto as Triano tries to get the roster to 12 for Caracas.

?At one point I said to Steve, man, this is not an easy job. It used to be we had a hard time convincing NBA players to play for our country and now we?re going to have to cut an NBA player,? said Triano.

?And Steve goes: ?that?s great? and I?m like ?not for me, I don?t want to be that guy? But that?s where we are, and it?s still going to be tough to find playing time for players who play in the NBA. And that?s one of the things we?re going to talk about. Some of these guys are going to have to make a sacrifice for the team and for their country and take a little bit of a different role than what they maybe expect because of who they are and where they come from.?

The buzz has been building for years and the best may yet be to come, but at last the future of Canada Basketball can get started.

MONTICELLO ? Rochelle Massey was sworn in Monday as Monticello's newest trustee.

Mayor Gordon Jenkins introduced his longtime live-in girlfriend as his appointee to the seat vacated by now-convicted felon T.C. Hutchins.

Jenkins all but confirmed Friday that he planned to put Massey on the board until a special election in March.

Jenkins has been mercilessly ridiculed on Facebook since rumors emerged last week that he was contemplating appointing her to the $6,588 annual position.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion," Jenkins told a small crowd. "If anybody has an issue, question or anything, please come to my office and I will address any issue you have "? I won't bite you. Don't be afraid of me."

Reaction to the appointment on Sullivan County social media sites has been overwhelmingly negative.

Aside from their status as domestic partners, the two were arrested together at Jenkins' store on Broadway in early 2010 and were co-defendants in a felony trademark counterfeiting case.

Both ultimately admitted to selling knock-off Nike shoes and other items, pleading guilty to misdemeanors. They were fined.

At the 5 p.m. specially called meeting on Monday, reaction was subdued. Massey came forward and was sworn in by Clerk Janine Gandy.

Other board members didn't speak about the appointment. Trustee Carmen Rue, the mayor's fiercest critic, later during the meeting stood up from her seat and lambasted Jenkins over his handling of the budget process. She didn't mention Massey sitting three seats from her.

"It was the mayor's appointment," Trustee Larissa Bennett said. "We didn't have a say in the matter. It doesn't matter if I was comfortable or not. It was his appointment."

John Snowden, a contractor and the brother of the village's code enforcement officer, said, "I think it is a great idea Rochelle is in there."

Of 25 people at the meeting, only village resident Janette Williams publicly spoke against it. She addressed Massey directly, saying she doubted she could be fair and truthful, or act independently in the interests of village taxpayers.

"He is just doing what the hell he wants," Williams said of Jenkins after the meeting. "I don't think it is right. Everyone here should have questioned that appointment."

Hutchins automatically lost his seat on July 11 when he was convicted by a jury in a felony corruption case of attempting to get his friend hired on the police force.

Jenkins initially indicated that he planned to wait for a special election to fill the seat. But last week he said two other board members were blocking his ability to pay village bills.

"I just want to say I can be a fair person," Massey said in her only comment. "I am a child of God and I will be fair and honest."

India to restore subsidized gas supply to Bhutan from August 1

NEW DELHI: India will restore the supply of subsidized gas to Bhutan from August 1, a month after it was halted and became a campaign issue in the Himalayan Kingdom's second national polls.

"We have obtained and completed all clearances ? technical and administrative. We are ready to supply the subsidized cooking gas and kerosene from August 1," official sources said here on Tuesday.

They also said the decision has been conveyed to the new Bhutanese government.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay met with the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan VP Haran at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang (National Assembly Hall) on Monday during which India's decision was conveyed, sources said.

Before the elections, the Indian Oil Corporation discontinued the supply of the subsidized fuel, on technical grounds with officials here maintaining that Bhutan's 10th Plan under which India was providing such assistance expired on June 30.

India's subsidy cut to Bhutan gave rise to reports that the decision was taken in view of government's unhappiness with former prime minister and chief of ruling political party Druk Phuensum Tshogpa Jigme Thinley's proximity with China.

Meanwhile, Haran was introduced to the new Bhutanese Cabinet ministers and as per the press release from the information and media division of the office of the Prime Minister, Tobgay and the Ambassador discussed wide range of issues.

The Ambassador also conveyed government's invitation for the Prime Minister's visit to India which was accepted, and assured that he would make a visit to India at the earliest.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) won a landslide victory in Bhutan's second national elections held on July 13. The PDP defeated Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) party by winning 32 seats out of the 47 in the National Assembly.

During the campaigning, the rival parties tried to impress upon voters that concerns like India's withdrawal of subsidy on kerosene and cooking gas would be resolved once they form the government.

'Written on Skin': Opera's new masterpiece

LONDON (AP) ? If opera is a dead art form, somebody forgot to tell George Benjamin.

The English composer's new opera, "Written on Skin," has taken the music world by storm, hailed by critics, embraced by audiences and sprouting up in performance seemingly everywhere.

Since its premiere last summer in Aix-en-Provence, France, it's been staged in London; Amsterdam; Toulouse, France; Vienna, and, most recently Munich, where a sell-out crowd cheered wildly after the last of three performances at the Prinzregententheater on Saturday night.

"The best opera written over the last 20 years," was the assessment of critic Renaud Machard in Le Monde last July. Wrote Alex Ross in the New Yorker magazine this spring: "Even the composer's most committed admirers are a little shocked. 'Written on Skin' feels like the work of a genius unleashed."

Curiously, for a work that many think may help point toward the future of opera, it's in some ways a deliberately backward-looking piece.

Based on the legend of a 13th century troubadour, the libretto by playwright Martin Crimp tells of a nobleman, called the Protector; his young wife, Agnes; and an artist ? known as the Boy ? whom he hires to create a book illustrating his greatness. In those days before the printing press, manuscripts were painted by applying gold and other metals to parchment made from animal skin, hence the literal meaning of the title.

The plot moves swiftly to its tragic conclusion: Agnes and the Boy become lovers; the Protector learns of the affair, murders his rival and feeds his heart to his wife. Still proclaiming her love for the Boy, she leaps from a balcony to her death.

Benjamin had collaborated with Crimp on his first opera, the chamber piece "Into the Little Hill," which premiered in 2006. He recalled how they settled on the subject for "Written on Skin," which was a commission from the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

"Bernard (Foccroulle, the festival's head) asked us to please situate it somewhere on the soil of Provence," Benjamin said. "Martin's daughter happened to be studying French medieval literature, and her professor came up with this story."

Both men found it appealing. "The strangeness is what attracted me," Benjamin said. "The strangeness and the simplicity."

Those terms could well be applied to Benjamin's score, which uses a large orchestra with some unusual instruments like glass harmonica, viola da gamba and bongos. "The idea," he said, "is to make an orchestral radiance to suggest the art of illumination."

The libretto takes a story that's already 800 years old and distances it still further by framing it as a tale told by angels who make frequent references to modern-day events. In addition, the characters speak of themselves in the third person and often utter their own stage directions.

Why use these multiple framing devices, instead of letting the plot unfold in a more traditional way?

"I couldn't have done a straightforward narrative," Benjamin said during an interview at his house in the Maida Vale neighborhood of London.

"I wanted to tell a story very directly because I think that's incredibly important in theater," he said, "but also I couldn't use naturalistic dialogue, because in the age of the movies, when I go to many new operas today I always think: 'Why are they singing?'

"Opera isn't the naturalistic medium it was in the 19th century," he continued. "Movies have done something to it. So you have to acknowledge that . and this is a terribly simple technique, just putting things at a little distance."

Perhaps counter-intuitively, Benjamin said that for him, the artificiality had a liberating effect on his composing: "It allowed me to just forget about the issue and maybe be more spontaneous than I would be."

As an example he cited a moment that comes a half-hour into the opera, which runs about 95 minutes and is performed without intermission.

"It's a pretty impassioned love scene," Benjamin said. "If it was conventional text, like a movie or a play, I believe I would cringe. It wouldn't seem right. It wouldn't seem authentic. So for me, this very simple technique opened up my music completely. Made it possible."

The result in the scene he mentioned is immensely powerful. As the voices of Agnes (soprano Barbara Hannigan) and the Boy (counter-tenor Lestyn Davies) intertwined in the Munich performance, their eerie harmonies carried a visceral erotic charge.

Benjamin, 53, said it took him just under three years to compose the score. During that time he stayed virtually locked in his second-floor study, leaving only to fulfill a few professional commitments and to walk in a nearby park.

"I'm very hermetic," he said. "I can't hear my music in my head if I'm distracted. I can't invent a world and live within it."

For now, Benjamin's life is in part taken up with the burgeoning demand for "Written on Skin." On Aug. 12, he'll conduct the opera's U.S. premiere, a concert performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. In September, he'll attend rehearsals for a new production in Bonn, Germany. Paris follows in November, and the first U.S. staged production will come in 2015.

But sooner or later, he'll have to retreat again to his work room. He and Crimp have a new commission for a piece to premiere at London's Royal Opera House in 2018. He said they are still discussing subjects.

Such an investment of time and energy suggests that Benjamin is optimistic about the possibilities for new opera.

"There have been numerous books written about opera as a dead form, and there is a certain train of thought to say yes, it is finished," Benjamin said. "I don't believe that.

"The form will change, as it has in the past. But people will want to sing to each other and will want to tell stories through singing."

Ingenious Dutch research lab boasts one patent created 'every 20 minutes'

The city responsible for the first solar-powered family car and a building shaped like a UFO is no stranger to creativity. Eindhoven, Netherlands was recently named "most inventive city" by Forbes magazine, probably thanks to the High Tech Campus (HTC) research and development center located there. The HTC is the result of the Dutch government's initiative to bolster high-tech innovation in the region after rounds of layoffs from companies like Philips. Scads of tech firms are holed up within HTC's walls including IBM, Intel and Accenture, with a focus on open cooperation and sharing of ideas and resources. Apparently, this has paid off in spades. According to the HTC's website, the campus is responsible for roughly 50 percent of the Netherlands' almost 10,000 patents each year. Yowza.

Two missing from wedding party after New York boat accident

(Reuters) - Two people were missing on Saturday after a boat with a wedding party aboard struck a barge on the Hudson River near New York City, and four others were taken to a hospital with injuries, local authorities and CNN said.

The sheriff's office of Rockland County, New York said the boat hit a construction barge on Friday night below the Tappan Zee bridge, a major transportation link across the Hudson River.

The people taken to a hospital had head injuries and one of them was unconscious when rescued from the badly-damaged boat, said Robert Vancura, of the Rockland County Sheriff's office.

The two missing were a bride-to-be whose wedding was scheduled to be in two weeks, and the best man, CNN reported, quoting a family member.

Police said they suspended the search for the missing overnight but resumed this morning.

The Journal News newspaper said the vessel was a 21-foot (6.4-metre) power boat.

India: Army Mistook Planets for Spy Drones

Maybe these guys should get out more and look at the sky occasionally to avoid international border wars. The Indian Army has been monitoring what they thought to be Chinese spy drones for six months and accused China of incursions into India. Cooler heads prevailed when it was discovered the ?drones? were actually Jupiter and Venus. roll eyes (sarcastic)

"Our task was to determine whether these unidentified objects were celestial or terrestrial," astronomer Tushar Prabhu told the paper. Only once the objects' movements were noted in relation to the stars were they identified as planets.

While most people don?t give Hester or Johnson much of chance against a cheetah, Johnson says he ran at full?speed.

?It was a cheetah,? Johnson said Friday with a laugh. ?I had?to.?

A year ago, some didn?t give Johnson a chance against defenses; he was repeatedly questioned whether he had lost a step, or more, coming off the worst season of his career in 2011. He responded by running for 1,243 yards in his third-best season?yet.

And about that speed ? Johnson scored three touchdowns of 80 yards or longer. He now has six such TDs in his career, twice as many as any other player in NFL history. So racing a cheetah for National Geographic?s Nat Geo Wild may help Johnson send a pre-emptive message before the season opens Sept. 8 in?Pittsburgh.

?I haven?t lost any speed,? Johnson said. ?I?m just ready to really get back on the field and continue to play this?game.?
