Apple berhasil menguasai 39,2 persen pangsa pasar AS, meningkat 0,3 persen dari periode sebelumnya.

Nonprofit, schools plan workplace-learning program in Santa Rosa ...

SANTA ROSA ? Santa Rosa City Schools is preparing to offer a new district-wide career readiness program this fall, partnering with the nonprofit Tomorrow?s Leaders Today to offer a 10-week course capped by a 40-hour internship with a regional employer.

Tomorrow's Leaders TodayWith some additional funding earmarked by the Sonoma County Office of Education ? the course will roll out with an inaugural two classes and be available by application to any junior or senior in the district.

It is the latest effort to connect students with regional employers in Sonoma County, with a goal of fostering ?soft skills? needed to function in the workplace and help strengthen the pathway connecting companies with a local talent pool.

?It?s another example of a public-private partnership, bringing more organizations together to support work-based learning,? said Stephen Jackson, director of career development and workforce preparation at the Office of Education.

The yet-to-be-named program is the second for Tomorrow?s Leaders Today, after a leadership course offered for more than two decades to high school juniors in Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Windsor and Petaluma.

Students will receive academic credit for completing the entire course, which has two distinct phases. In the first eight-week portion, instructors will focus on work skills like collaboration, communication and organization. The second two-week phase will involve the internship.

By scheduling the internship portion after the soft-skills course, students are expected to be prepared for the workplace environment, said Katie Barr, executive director of Tomorrow?s Leaders Today. Even for college and high school graduates, those skills are often lacking, she said.

?We?re focused so heavily on the academia part of it, we don?t focus on the soft skills,? Ms. Barr said.

Sonoma County Schools currently offers a number of career technical education programs, with three-course ?pathways? in areas like agriculture, construction and a recently revamped Geospacial Technology Pathway at Piner High School. The soft skills focus of the new course could help to compliment those other programs, said Debi Batini, director of career pathways and community outreach for the district.

?What?s unique about this course is that it is really focused on work-based learning, while the pathways focus on the whole industry,? she said.

Leaders in the program are currently lining up industry partners to serve as hosts for internships, with the Sonoma County Alliance looking within its own membership for participants, Ms. Barr said.

While a number of companies in the North Bay business community have shown a proclivity towards education initiatives, connecting with those companies can be a challenge for the limited resources of school districts, Mr. Jackson said. The new course will include a business liaison to help develop those connections, along with an instructor.

?Teachers, quite frankly, don?t usually have the time to meet with organizations, set up workplace learning and job shadows,? he said. The county office itself is considering staff that would be dedicated to that role, he said.

The Tomorrow?s Leaders Today approach takes cues from the School to Career summer work-based learning course offered by the Marin County Office of Education, which has grown to involve more than 200 partner businesses and more than 2,000 students per year, Ms. Barr said.

While the Sonoma County program will be smaller at its onset, Ms. Barr said that the program is expected to grow over time and could incorporate more than 200 students per year by the end of its current three-year funding window. It could grow further and extend across the county over time, as school districts incorporate the course into their own programs.

?Our goal is to pilot this and track it,? she said.

The majority of that early growth is expected to be incubated within Santa Rosa City Schools, though Healdsburg High School has plans to augment its existing work-based learning programs with the soft skills education component from Tomorrow?s Leaders Today this fall, Ms. Barr said.

Students will be expected to assemble a portfolio of their work, something that could serve as an asset for employment or college application, she said. The nonprofit is currently in talks with the University of California system to have the course be eligible as a so-called ?a-g? prerequisite for enrollment.

In general, career technical education and work-based learning has been a topic of increased focus both in the North Bay and nationally. The administration of President Barack Obama has proposed making that education a stronger federal mandate, echoing talks on the state and regional level, Mr. Jackson said.

?With the education and training that is required in our information economy, the gap is closing between what it means to be college ready and what it means to be career ready,? he said.

David Brooks Eviscerates GOP Rep. On Immigration: Never Seen ...

David Brooks absolutely owned Idaho Congressman Paul Labrador on Meet the Press Sunday morning, easily dismantling Labrador?s criticisms of the gang of eight?s immigration reform bill as ?intellectually weak? to an unprecedented degree.

?They put the legalization of 11 million people ahead of security,? Labrador said of the Senate?s immigration bill, despite the fact that the Corker amendment provided for a comically large escalation in border security.

?If you give to this adminstration the authority to decide when they?re going to enforce the law, how they?re going to enforce the law, and you tell them that it?s okay if they decide if there?s going to be 20,000 border patrol agents, or they get to determine when the border is secure?? Labrador said. ?I can tell you that Janet Napolitano has already said that the border is secure. So what?s going to happen is we?re going to give legalization to 11 million people, and Janet Napolitano is going to come to Congress and tell us that the border is secure and nothing else needs to happen.?

Brooks was having none of this:

?I?ve seen a lot of intellectually weak cases in this town. I?ve rarely seen as intellectually a weak case as the case against the Senate immigraiton bill. The Republicans say they want to reduce illegal immigration; the Congressional Budget Office says the Senate bill will reduce it by a third to half. They say they want economic growth; all the top conservative economists say it?ll produce economic growth. They say they want to reduce the debt; the CBO says it will reduce the debt. All the big major objectives the Republicans stand for, the Senate immigration bill will do. The other things they?re talking about are secondary and tertiary issues. Whether we get 86% border protection or 90%?compared to the big things this bill does, they?re miniscule. I?m mystified.?

?I?m sorry, what I just heard was totally ridiculous,? Labrador said. ?If you listen to what the CBO said, they said that it?s going to be between one-third and fifty percent reduction in illegal immigration. That means that every five years we?re going to have to do another amnesty? For somebody to sit here on national TV and say that it is actually a weak argument for us to argue that we want 90% security is beyond the pale.?

Brooks couldn?t believe what he was hearing. ?The CBO said it would reduce it by a third to fifty percent, and what I heard the congressman saying is he won?t support it because we?d have to go back and do a Reagan.?

?That?s not what I said!? Labrador yelled. ?Don?t put words in my mouth.?

?The current law produces ?X? much illegal immigration,? Brooks said. ?This law cuts it significantly. It?s better than the current law. Generally when something is better than what we got, generally you want to support that thing.?

Self Improvement | Bereavement - How to Cope With Grief ...

griefThe death of a loved one is a profound source of grief and help for bereavement is often necessary to help you through the ordeal. You may need support long after the funeral because you cannot guide your emotions away from the intense grief. Coping with loss is difficult but you can work through the pain and move on with your life.

Letting Go of Guilt

You may feel guilty for wanting to be happy again even if it is on a subconscious level. The lost loved one was such an important part of your life that the loss is unthinkable even though it may have happened a while ago. One of the steps to recovery is to let go of your guilt.

Your loved one would not want you to continue in anguish but you have a hard time letting go of the grief. You have reason for that. The grief is the only thing you feel you have left of that person. However, you can change your focus to see that you have your memories as well.

Celebrating a Life

Life is precious and you can celebrate the time you shared with that special person. Even a brief bout of happy years together is a wonderful gift that many people never have. Each relationship you foster is precious and each should be celebrated with joy, even ones that are no longer here.

Recognizing What You Have

When you are in help for bereavement, you are prompted to focus on the relationships you have now instead of focusing on your loss. You also have a relationship with memories that can be fostered and shared rather than used as a source of wallowing.

Those close to you want to support you as you make your way back to the path of happiness. You can focus on your life and the impact you have on those around you. This inspiring motivation can help you work through your grief.

Embracing the Grieving Process

Help for bereavement begins with the grieving process. The process consists of stages including denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. You must go through the stages in order to heal. This is a painful process but it helps you overcome your bereavement over time.

Self-hypnosis offers the support you need in order to pass through the stages of grief. This ensures that you complete the process. The hypnosis helps you get through the denial and anger through your subconscious mind. You can work through the unrealistic bargaining stage and depression to make your way to accept the loss.

Losing someone you love is an aspect of life you never want to face. If you are drowning in grief, self-hypnosis can help you work through the grieving process to achieve acceptance and peace. Help with bereavement is available in your subconscious mind.

07/07 Padres Preview: Game 89 @ Washington

The Padres will send the young lefty Robbie Erlin to the hill to go up against San Diego native Stephen Strasburg.

This Padres road trip started out promising with a win over the Marlins on June 28th. Since then, they've dropped eight straight games. Today in the 10th and final game of the trip, the Friars will get one last chance for a win before returning home to San Diego. Two young pitchers will battle it out on the mound in the finale at Nationals Park.

Rookie southpaw Robbie Erlin will get the ball for the Padres in his fourth career start. He ran into trouble his last time out when he was tagged for three runs and failed to escape the fourth inning. He faces the Nationals for the first time today as he tries to break San Diego out of their longest losing streak in two years.

The Padres offense has stepped up the production these past two games, but has been otherwise stymied by pitching on the road during their losing streak. After combining for seven total runs over the first six of their eight-game skid, they scored eleven in the first two games in Washington. Despite that, however, they still struggled to get runs home when they really needed to, hitting just 3-for-23 with runners in scoring position.

Today they'll face San Diego's own Stephen Strasburg, who despite his 4-6 record this season has been throwing the ball very well. He has a 1.29 ERA over his last nine starts and a 2.24 ERA on the year. He's already been tested against the Padres this season, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in eight innings of work back in May at Petco Park.

Strasburg's bane this season has been a lack of run support. Over his last four starts (of which the Nationals have gone 1-3), he's gotten just four total runs of support from his offense. In his most recent outing, he held the Brewers to three hits while striking out eight in seven shutout innings, but his bullpen gave up four runs and the Nats couldn't put a single run on the board, meaning a no-decision for Strasburg.

The Padres dropped back into the NL West cellar after yesterday's loss and now sit 6 1/2 games out of first place. They really need this win to stay afloat and help them get back on track here in the second half of the season.
