Constructive Feedback University: Tamron Hall & Jay-Z - How The Progressive-Fundamentalist Failure To Develop "The Least Of These" After Past Investments Can Be Spun Into Support By Present Day Advocacy

If You Are The Forces That RECEIVED THE VALUABLES From These Striking Low Skilled / Low Pay Workers After Promising Them STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT That Did Not Come - WOULD YOU STAND OPPOSED TO THEIR EFFORTS - Or ECHO THEM - Knowing That They WILL LOOK PAST YOUR FAILURES, Turing It Into APPRECIATION?

Why is it that Tamron Hall of MSNBC can't bring herself to note that these are the people who would be "Factory Workers" - the REPLACEMENT WORK after the industrial jobs left BUT THE PROGRESSIVES GAINED DOMINATE POWER IN OUR BIG CITIES are now "McJobs".

Someone please explain to me why INDUSTRIALISTS are expected to PRODUCE JOBS but the PROGRESSIVES who retain the loyalties of THE LEAST OF THESE, now controlling these MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ZONES are excused from their failure to create SKILLED JOBS commensurate with the demands for goods and services that the marketplace that they have political control over.

When You Don't Capture All Of The VALUABLES That Have Been Transacted Over Time - YOU CAN'T HELP But To Believe That Those Who GIVE "The Least Of These" A VOICE TODAY - Should Be THANKED Rather Than Have A RETRAINING ORDER Placed Upon Them For Their Previous Theft.

Long story short - YOU DON'T HAVE TO "DEVELOP PEOPLE AS PROMISED".
You only need to AFFIRM WHAT THEY BELIEVE and they will show appreciation that you gave them voice in the media.

Grange: From hype to hope for Canada Basketball

Toronto ? The buzz has been building for years, starting as names like Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph, Andrew Wiggins and many more got whispered about, Tweeted about, YouTubed and ranked when they were in their early teens.

Canada is coming.

The buzz got a jolt just over a year ago when Steve Nash came on board with Canada Basketball as the general manager of men?s senior national team. The hum got louder when Anthony Bennett became the first Canadian to be taken first overall in the NBA draft last month and Wiggins became the most talked about non-NBA player in the world this past year and the leading candidate to be the No.1 pick in the NBA draft in 2014.

Sports Illustrated noticed. ESPN has noticed. The world has noticed.

?This really is the Golden Age of Canadian basketball,? said Nash on Monday as he and his hand-picked head coach Jay Triano announced the 18-man training camp roster for the first team that will compete for Canada internationally since he took charge of the senior men?s team last May. ?We?re thriving. We have talent, potential and depth at every age group.?

On Friday arguably the most gifted group of Canadian basketball players yet assembled ? true even despite a few key absences ? will begin training camp to prepare for the FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas, Venezuela August 30th ? Sept. 11th.

Canada is coming, there is no questioning that. The question of course is when and where exactly Canada will end up and how to keep the pot simmering without turning the heat up too high or too soon.

Now, finally, the hype hits the floor, and everyone will get to find out if the Golden Age will translate into an international medal of any kind ? it?s been a while, after all.

The Canadian senior men?s team won silver at the 1936 Olympics, the first time basketball was included. Fair to say the international talent pool has gotten deeper in the past 80 years.

Canada?s best result at a major global competition since is a fourth place finish at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and again at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where the field was weakened by the Eastern Bloc boycott. Canadian men last appeared in the Olympics in 2000 when Nash was still playing for the team and Triano was in his first stint as coach. Their most recent World Championship result was 22nd out of 24 teams in 2010. There is nowhere to go but up.

A top-four finish is required for Canada to qualify for the World Championships in Spain next summer ? considered a key step in getting a young Canadian team crucial international experience in advance of the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Efforts are being made to keep things in perspective ? the 2018 Worlds or 2020 Olympics are better bets for a Canadian podium appearance given how young Canada?s best projected players are now ? but that will only get harder as more NBA talent comes on stream.

?We?re desperate to qualify (for the Worlds next summer) but we may not,? says Nash. ?But no matter what we have to stick to the plan and the plan is to develop our players, to form a chemistry, to give them experience at an international level and the best way to do that is to qualify and give them another experience next summer.

?But the truth is it?s going to be a real challenge (this summer),? Nash said. ?We have a very young team, a team without a lot of international experience and a team with very little experience playing together.?

Nash is right. Canada may not qualify this summer and focusing on the process and the longer term goals for the program is sound thinking.

The only problem in his logic is that Canada should qualify for the Worlds this summer and failing to do so would be a considerable sideways step, if not a backwards one for the program. Part of Nash?s job is raise private money for the program, an easier task if momentum is building. Playing next summer means more experience sooner for young players that badly need it and badly need to play together. The powerhouse USA won?t be at the tournament as they have already qualified for the Worlds. Stalwarts such as Argentina and Brazil having aging cores and won?t be sending many of their top players. The field is open.

Among the 18 players invited to training camp are four players who will be on NBA rosters in the 2013-14 season ? Thompson, the emerging power forward with the Cleveland Cavaliers; Joseph who backed up Tony Parker with the San Antonio Spurs on their run to the NBA Finals; veteran reserve big Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat and Andrew Nicholson who just finished his rookie season with the Orlando Magic. Two others ? Andy Rautins and Kris Joseph have recent NBA experience while the likes of Carl English, Levon Kendall and Jermaine Anderson are veteran pros with experience in top leagues in Europe and competing for Canada overseas.

It?s the foundation of a pretty good team, at least on paper.

?Back in 2000 we had two NBA players ? we had Steve and we had (since retired) Todd MacCulloch and we were like, ?man, these guys are great? and we built around them,? said Triano, who helped coach that group to a 5-2 record in Sydney and within a whisker of a medal. ?Now we have so many other options. The depth in our country is great.?

It would greater still if Bennett, the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers wasn?t recuperating from shoulder surgery, Kelly Olynyk of the Boston Celtics, taken 13th overall, wasn?t on the shelf with plantar fasciitis, Los Angeles Lakers centre Robert Sacre hadn?t declined an invitation to camp and Wiggins, the 18-year-old phenom set to attend the University of Kansas, hadn?t decided to use the summer to get ready for college and his push to justify projections that have him going first overall next season.

It should make for a competitive training camp in advance of exhibition games against Jamaica on August 8th and 10th in Toronto as Triano tries to get the roster to 12 for Caracas.

?At one point I said to Steve, man, this is not an easy job. It used to be we had a hard time convincing NBA players to play for our country and now we?re going to have to cut an NBA player,? said Triano.

?And Steve goes: ?that?s great? and I?m like ?not for me, I don?t want to be that guy? But that?s where we are, and it?s still going to be tough to find playing time for players who play in the NBA. And that?s one of the things we?re going to talk about. Some of these guys are going to have to make a sacrifice for the team and for their country and take a little bit of a different role than what they maybe expect because of who they are and where they come from.?

The buzz has been building for years and the best may yet be to come, but at last the future of Canada Basketball can get started.

MONTICELLO ? Rochelle Massey was sworn in Monday as Monticello's newest trustee.

Mayor Gordon Jenkins introduced his longtime live-in girlfriend as his appointee to the seat vacated by now-convicted felon T.C. Hutchins.

Jenkins all but confirmed Friday that he planned to put Massey on the board until a special election in March.

Jenkins has been mercilessly ridiculed on Facebook since rumors emerged last week that he was contemplating appointing her to the $6,588 annual position.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion," Jenkins told a small crowd. "If anybody has an issue, question or anything, please come to my office and I will address any issue you have "? I won't bite you. Don't be afraid of me."

Reaction to the appointment on Sullivan County social media sites has been overwhelmingly negative.

Aside from their status as domestic partners, the two were arrested together at Jenkins' store on Broadway in early 2010 and were co-defendants in a felony trademark counterfeiting case.

Both ultimately admitted to selling knock-off Nike shoes and other items, pleading guilty to misdemeanors. They were fined.

At the 5 p.m. specially called meeting on Monday, reaction was subdued. Massey came forward and was sworn in by Clerk Janine Gandy.

Other board members didn't speak about the appointment. Trustee Carmen Rue, the mayor's fiercest critic, later during the meeting stood up from her seat and lambasted Jenkins over his handling of the budget process. She didn't mention Massey sitting three seats from her.

"It was the mayor's appointment," Trustee Larissa Bennett said. "We didn't have a say in the matter. It doesn't matter if I was comfortable or not. It was his appointment."

John Snowden, a contractor and the brother of the village's code enforcement officer, said, "I think it is a great idea Rochelle is in there."

Of 25 people at the meeting, only village resident Janette Williams publicly spoke against it. She addressed Massey directly, saying she doubted she could be fair and truthful, or act independently in the interests of village taxpayers.

"He is just doing what the hell he wants," Williams said of Jenkins after the meeting. "I don't think it is right. Everyone here should have questioned that appointment."

Hutchins automatically lost his seat on July 11 when he was convicted by a jury in a felony corruption case of attempting to get his friend hired on the police force.

Jenkins initially indicated that he planned to wait for a special election to fill the seat. But last week he said two other board members were blocking his ability to pay village bills.

"I just want to say I can be a fair person," Massey said in her only comment. "I am a child of God and I will be fair and honest."

India to restore subsidized gas supply to Bhutan from August 1

NEW DELHI: India will restore the supply of subsidized gas to Bhutan from August 1, a month after it was halted and became a campaign issue in the Himalayan Kingdom's second national polls.

"We have obtained and completed all clearances ? technical and administrative. We are ready to supply the subsidized cooking gas and kerosene from August 1," official sources said here on Tuesday.

They also said the decision has been conveyed to the new Bhutanese government.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay met with the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan VP Haran at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang (National Assembly Hall) on Monday during which India's decision was conveyed, sources said.

Before the elections, the Indian Oil Corporation discontinued the supply of the subsidized fuel, on technical grounds with officials here maintaining that Bhutan's 10th Plan under which India was providing such assistance expired on June 30.

India's subsidy cut to Bhutan gave rise to reports that the decision was taken in view of government's unhappiness with former prime minister and chief of ruling political party Druk Phuensum Tshogpa Jigme Thinley's proximity with China.

Meanwhile, Haran was introduced to the new Bhutanese Cabinet ministers and as per the press release from the information and media division of the office of the Prime Minister, Tobgay and the Ambassador discussed wide range of issues.

The Ambassador also conveyed government's invitation for the Prime Minister's visit to India which was accepted, and assured that he would make a visit to India at the earliest.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) won a landslide victory in Bhutan's second national elections held on July 13. The PDP defeated Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) party by winning 32 seats out of the 47 in the National Assembly.

During the campaigning, the rival parties tried to impress upon voters that concerns like India's withdrawal of subsidy on kerosene and cooking gas would be resolved once they form the government.

'Written on Skin': Opera's new masterpiece

LONDON (AP) ? If opera is a dead art form, somebody forgot to tell George Benjamin.

The English composer's new opera, "Written on Skin," has taken the music world by storm, hailed by critics, embraced by audiences and sprouting up in performance seemingly everywhere.

Since its premiere last summer in Aix-en-Provence, France, it's been staged in London; Amsterdam; Toulouse, France; Vienna, and, most recently Munich, where a sell-out crowd cheered wildly after the last of three performances at the Prinzregententheater on Saturday night.

"The best opera written over the last 20 years," was the assessment of critic Renaud Machard in Le Monde last July. Wrote Alex Ross in the New Yorker magazine this spring: "Even the composer's most committed admirers are a little shocked. 'Written on Skin' feels like the work of a genius unleashed."

Curiously, for a work that many think may help point toward the future of opera, it's in some ways a deliberately backward-looking piece.

Based on the legend of a 13th century troubadour, the libretto by playwright Martin Crimp tells of a nobleman, called the Protector; his young wife, Agnes; and an artist ? known as the Boy ? whom he hires to create a book illustrating his greatness. In those days before the printing press, manuscripts were painted by applying gold and other metals to parchment made from animal skin, hence the literal meaning of the title.

The plot moves swiftly to its tragic conclusion: Agnes and the Boy become lovers; the Protector learns of the affair, murders his rival and feeds his heart to his wife. Still proclaiming her love for the Boy, she leaps from a balcony to her death.

Benjamin had collaborated with Crimp on his first opera, the chamber piece "Into the Little Hill," which premiered in 2006. He recalled how they settled on the subject for "Written on Skin," which was a commission from the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

"Bernard (Foccroulle, the festival's head) asked us to please situate it somewhere on the soil of Provence," Benjamin said. "Martin's daughter happened to be studying French medieval literature, and her professor came up with this story."

Both men found it appealing. "The strangeness is what attracted me," Benjamin said. "The strangeness and the simplicity."

Those terms could well be applied to Benjamin's score, which uses a large orchestra with some unusual instruments like glass harmonica, viola da gamba and bongos. "The idea," he said, "is to make an orchestral radiance to suggest the art of illumination."

The libretto takes a story that's already 800 years old and distances it still further by framing it as a tale told by angels who make frequent references to modern-day events. In addition, the characters speak of themselves in the third person and often utter their own stage directions.

Why use these multiple framing devices, instead of letting the plot unfold in a more traditional way?

"I couldn't have done a straightforward narrative," Benjamin said during an interview at his house in the Maida Vale neighborhood of London.

"I wanted to tell a story very directly because I think that's incredibly important in theater," he said, "but also I couldn't use naturalistic dialogue, because in the age of the movies, when I go to many new operas today I always think: 'Why are they singing?'

"Opera isn't the naturalistic medium it was in the 19th century," he continued. "Movies have done something to it. So you have to acknowledge that . and this is a terribly simple technique, just putting things at a little distance."

Perhaps counter-intuitively, Benjamin said that for him, the artificiality had a liberating effect on his composing: "It allowed me to just forget about the issue and maybe be more spontaneous than I would be."

As an example he cited a moment that comes a half-hour into the opera, which runs about 95 minutes and is performed without intermission.

"It's a pretty impassioned love scene," Benjamin said. "If it was conventional text, like a movie or a play, I believe I would cringe. It wouldn't seem right. It wouldn't seem authentic. So for me, this very simple technique opened up my music completely. Made it possible."

The result in the scene he mentioned is immensely powerful. As the voices of Agnes (soprano Barbara Hannigan) and the Boy (counter-tenor Lestyn Davies) intertwined in the Munich performance, their eerie harmonies carried a visceral erotic charge.

Benjamin, 53, said it took him just under three years to compose the score. During that time he stayed virtually locked in his second-floor study, leaving only to fulfill a few professional commitments and to walk in a nearby park.

"I'm very hermetic," he said. "I can't hear my music in my head if I'm distracted. I can't invent a world and live within it."

For now, Benjamin's life is in part taken up with the burgeoning demand for "Written on Skin." On Aug. 12, he'll conduct the opera's U.S. premiere, a concert performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. In September, he'll attend rehearsals for a new production in Bonn, Germany. Paris follows in November, and the first U.S. staged production will come in 2015.

But sooner or later, he'll have to retreat again to his work room. He and Crimp have a new commission for a piece to premiere at London's Royal Opera House in 2018. He said they are still discussing subjects.

Such an investment of time and energy suggests that Benjamin is optimistic about the possibilities for new opera.

"There have been numerous books written about opera as a dead form, and there is a certain train of thought to say yes, it is finished," Benjamin said. "I don't believe that.

"The form will change, as it has in the past. But people will want to sing to each other and will want to tell stories through singing."

Ingenious Dutch research lab boasts one patent created 'every 20 minutes'

The city responsible for the first solar-powered family car and a building shaped like a UFO is no stranger to creativity. Eindhoven, Netherlands was recently named "most inventive city" by Forbes magazine, probably thanks to the High Tech Campus (HTC) research and development center located there. The HTC is the result of the Dutch government's initiative to bolster high-tech innovation in the region after rounds of layoffs from companies like Philips. Scads of tech firms are holed up within HTC's walls including IBM, Intel and Accenture, with a focus on open cooperation and sharing of ideas and resources. Apparently, this has paid off in spades. According to the HTC's website, the campus is responsible for roughly 50 percent of the Netherlands' almost 10,000 patents each year. Yowza.

Two missing from wedding party after New York boat accident

(Reuters) - Two people were missing on Saturday after a boat with a wedding party aboard struck a barge on the Hudson River near New York City, and four others were taken to a hospital with injuries, local authorities and CNN said.

The sheriff's office of Rockland County, New York said the boat hit a construction barge on Friday night below the Tappan Zee bridge, a major transportation link across the Hudson River.

The people taken to a hospital had head injuries and one of them was unconscious when rescued from the badly-damaged boat, said Robert Vancura, of the Rockland County Sheriff's office.

The two missing were a bride-to-be whose wedding was scheduled to be in two weeks, and the best man, CNN reported, quoting a family member.

Police said they suspended the search for the missing overnight but resumed this morning.

The Journal News newspaper said the vessel was a 21-foot (6.4-metre) power boat.

India: Army Mistook Planets for Spy Drones

Maybe these guys should get out more and look at the sky occasionally to avoid international border wars. The Indian Army has been monitoring what they thought to be Chinese spy drones for six months and accused China of incursions into India. A year ago, some didn?t give Johnson a chance against defenses; he was repeatedly questioned whether he had lost a step, or more, coming off the worst season of his career in 2011. He responded by running for 1,243 yards in his third-best season?yet.

And about that speed ? Johnson scored three touchdowns of 80 yards or longer. He now has six such TDs in his career, twice as many as any other player in NFL history. So racing a cheetah for National Geographic?s Nat Geo Wild may help Johnson send a pre-emptive message before the season opens Sept. 8 in?Pittsburgh.

?I haven?t lost any speed,? Johnson said. ?I?m just ready to really get back on the field and continue to play this?game.?

Huawei runs David Cameron's preferred porn-filtering system, just FYI (updated)

David Cameron's preferred pornfiltering system is run by Huawei, just FYI

Authorities in the UK have never had quite the same level of anxiety over Huawei that we've witnessed in the US, and they've so far been happy to let the Chinese firm get involved with numerous parts of the country's data infrastructure. As it turns out, the company's control even extends to the "Homesafe" filter used by internet service provider TalkTalk, which David Cameron recently praised during his push for tighter controls on adult content. The BBC discovered that UK-based Huawei employees are able to decide which sites are blocked on TalkTalk's service, and that even users who opt out of Homesafe have their internet usage data routed through Huawei's system. Whether or not this is an issue depends entirely on how much you trust reports of close ties between Huawei and the Chinese government, versus Huawei's claim that these concerns are based on anti-Chinese prejudice rather than evidence. From a purely practical point of view, however, if the mission is to block off huge swathes of the internet, why wouldn't you hire an expert?

Update: A representative of Huawei has been in touch to provide the company's side of the story. He said that Huawei doesn't "run" the Homesafe system, but that the system is "supported by Huawei" without Huawei having control over it. He added that Huawei does not decide which sites are blocked, and that the final decision as to what filters are implemented rests with TalkTalk. Meanwhile, the BBC is apparently standing by its story, since it has issued no retraction.

iPhone Blameless In NSW Electrocution Case

Yesterday, we mentioned the reported hospitalisation of a NSW women due to an electric shock allegedly caused by an iPhone. Ambulance NSW has now informed Gizmodo that an iPhone was not actually involved in the incident.

Picture: Ambulance NSW

Giz spoke to a Ambulance NSW representative this morning who confirmed that the woman was transported to hospital for reasons that were not a result of burns or shocks related to mobile phones.

?Ambulance Triple Zero received an emergency call about an electric shock caused by a phone and early media reports were based on conversations from unencrypted scanners,? the representative explained. ?But it turns out that an iPhone was not involved.?

That said, Ambulance NSW stressed the importance of handling household electrical appliances properly and avoiding faulty products, including frayed cord connections. Between January 1 and June 30 this year, some 232 Triple Zero (000) calls were attended by paramedics for electric shock.

?You only need 1000th of a milliamp to interfere with the electrical activity of your heart, which is not much at all,? NSW Ambulance Inspector John Brotherhood said in a statement. ?Basically, if the jolt moves you, if it takes your breath away or if it?s at all a cause for concern, you need to get it checked out.?

If you or somebody in your care gets zapped by a phone or other electronic device, Ambulance NSW advises the following:

  • where burns exists, run it under cold water for at least 20 minutes
  • remember the person is electrified until released. Take precautions against receiving a shock yourself by switching off the electricity. If power cannot be disconnected, unless higher than household voltage is involved, free the victim from contact by using a dry stick, board, rope, clothing, plastic pipe or other non-conducting device. DO NOT touch the victim with your bare hands or any metal or moist object
  • assess the level of consciousness, then if victim is not breathing, conduct CPR
  • if at all concerned, dial Triple Zero (000) and ask for Ambulance

Apple keeps tech stocks afloat

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), one of the most widely-held stocks, often has an outsized impact on the overall tech sector as well as the broader market. Its 5% rise helped the tech-heavy Nasdaq finish just above the flat line Wednesday. A 7% jump in shares of Electronic Arts (EA) on the back of an earnings beat also helped.

Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P 500 slipped slightly, dragged down by Caterpillar (CAT, Fortune 500), Broadcom (BRCM, Fortune 500) and AT&T (T, Fortune 500). All three delivered results short of Wall Street's forecasts.

Caterpillar also lowered its earnings and sales outlook for the year, which sent its stock 2.4% lower. The heavy equipment manufacturer's stock was the biggest loser in the Dow.

The drop in the two indexes comes after the Dow closed at a record high Tuesday, while the S&P 500 remained near its record high. Both have gained more than 18% so far this year, as has the Nasdaq.

Stocks have been grinding higher in recent days because investors took solace from mostly improved earnings. Overall, corporate earnings have been better than anticipated, although revenue growth remains modest.

More than a third of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported second-quarter results. So far, more than 65% have topped analysts' low expectations, according to S&P Capital IQ.

After the closing bell, Facebook (FB) reported solid earnings thanks to strong mobile ad revenue. Shares of the social media giant soared in after-hours trading.

Aside from earnings, Dell (DELL, Fortune 500) said it has received a revised offer from founder Michael Dell, and would be holding a special meeting Aug. 2 to consider its options.

Apparel company Hanes Brands (HBI) said it reached an agreement to buy Maidenform Brands (MFB) in an all-cash deal worth $575 million.

On the economic front, the Commerce Department said new home sales rose to a five-year high, with an annual rate of 497,000 in June, up 8.3% from May. Economists had expected an annual rate of 483,000.

European markets ended modestly higher after the latest eurozone purchasing managers' index showed the region was stabilizing. Manufacturing output grew for the first time since February 2012, while the service sector saw its smallest rate of decline for 18 months.

"The hope for the eurozone is that rising confidence encourages businesses to pare back job cutting and become more prepared to invest," said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight.

True-crime writer Ann Rule sues Seattle newspaper

SEATTLE (AP) ? True-crime author Ann Rule is suing a weekly Seattle newspaper, saying she was defamed in 2011 when the fiance of a convicted killer wrote a lengthy article accusing her of "sloppy storytelling."

The lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court last week, is the latest twist in a long-running feud precipitated by Rule's book about Liysa Northon, an Oregon woman who served 12 years in prison after killing her husband in 2000.

Northon argued she was a battered spouse and said she shot her husband, pilot Chris Northon, during a camping trip in eastern Oregon to protect herself and her children. But Rule's book "Heart Full of Lies" laid out a different theory: that Liysa Northon had long planned the killing and faked evidence of abuse to cover up her real motive, collecting insurance money and other benefits.

Liysa Northon pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was released from prison last fall. She sued Rule for defamation ? a case that was dismissed by a federal judge in 2007, with Liysa Northon and her father ultimately being ordered to pay more than $60,000 for Rule's legal fees after an unsuccessful appeal.

In 2011, the Seattle Weekly ran an article about the Chris Northon case by Rick Swart, a freelance writer who previously served as the editor and publisher of a small Oregon newspaper, the Wallowa County Chieftain. The article accused Rule of making numerous mistakes in her book and ignoring important facts beneficial to Liysa Northon's case.

The Seattle Weekly's then-editor, Caleb Hannan, has said he didn't learn until after the article was published that Swart and Northon were engaged. The couple got married in prison later that year.

In a lengthy editor's note days after the piece ran, Hannan explained the omission and said he had uncovered several minor mistakes in Swart's reporting.

Rule argues in her lawsuit that the damage had been done because to sell her books, she relies on her reputation for accuracy and attention to detail.

"The article contained innumerable inaccuracies and untruths concerning the testimony and evidence in the trial of Liysa Northon and also included various unfounded personal attacks on Rule," her lawyer, Anne Bremner, wrote in the complaint. "At the time ... Swart and Northon were engaged, and any meaningful inquiry by Seattle Weekly or Hannan should have discovered this significant source of bias."

Hannan, Swart and the Seattle Weekly, all of whom are named as defendants, did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

The lawsuit seeks "reasonable damages."

Rule has written dozens of books. Her first, "The Killer Beside Me," came out in 1980 and detailed her time working on a crisis hotline with serial killer Ted Bundy.

Development of safe alternatives

Synthetic materials made from organic polymers usually burn very well due to their high carbon content; when turned into foams, they ignite even more easily -- and, depending on their chemical compositions, they produce toxic gases such as hydrogen cyanide or carbon monoxide. For this reason, polyurethane foams and other similar products have to be treated with flame retardants. These foam materials are widely used in upholstered furniture and mattresses, as insulation and packaging materials and as expanding spray foams.

Conventional halogenated flame retardants such as tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) or some polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are suspected of being harmful to health and the environment: a number of these substances are extremely persistent and accumulate in the environment, have hormone-like effects and are even thought to be carcinogenic. Non-harmful replacements are therefore called for. These are exactly what Empa researchers have developed in conjunction with Swiss company FoamPartner within the scope of a project sponsored by the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI).

Healthier, more environmentally friendly and with no additional cost

The novel flame retardants are organic phosphorus-containing compounds, so-called phosphoramidates. The Empa researchers synthesised several of these substances (which differ from each other in terms of the type of amine substituents attached to the phosphorus) and added them to the polyurethane foam in increasing concentrations. First results indicate that the flame retardants did not have a negative effect on the foam manufacturing process. As a result, conventional agents that are harmful to health may soon be a thing of the past. The research results have recently been accepted by the professional journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research and authorised for publication.

Ford touts pilot project that will paint curbs red

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has announced a new initiative to more clearly indicate the section of the road where cars are not supposed to stop.

Curbs will be painted red to mark the areas where parking is not allowed.

The intent of the pilot project is to help improve traffic flow, to make it clear where drivers can park and improve pedestrian safety.

"It's about clarity because parking signage can be confusing or unclear," Ford told reporters on Tuesday morning.

The mayor said the pilot project will be introduced at nine sites in Toronto and run for six to eight months. After that, city staff will evaluate the results.

On Tuesday afternoon, the city issued a news release listing the locations where the pilot project will be tested:

  • University Avenue, north of Armoury Street
  • University Avenue, south of Armoury Street
  • Spadina Avenue near Dundas Street West
  • John Street, north of Wellington Street West
  • Two locations on Armoury Street
  • St. Clair Avenue and Dufferin Street
  • Town Centre Court near the Scarborough Town Centre
  • North York Boulevard, east of Beecroft Road

Apple's 3Q earnings sag, but top Street estimates

(AP) ? Apple's sales of older, less expensive iPhones climbed in its latest quarter, highlighting the challenges facing the world's most valuable technology company as it tries to reverse a recent decline in its earnings and prove that it can still innovate.

The results announced Tuesday topped the projections of analysts who steer the way investors tend to react to financial reports. That helped lift Apple's stock by $16.39, or nearly 4 percent, to $435.38 in extended trading after the numbers came out. The shares still remain down more than 35 percent since the latest model of the iPhone came out 10 months ago.

The downturn largely reflects the intensifying competition in the smartphone and tablet computer markets. Apple defined and then dominated those markets for several years to propel the company into a hyper-growth phase that enthralled Wall Street. But there are now signs that Apple's once seemingly irrepressible growth is stalling as rivals such as Google Inc., Samsung Electronics and Amazon.com Inc. make inroads largely by undercutting Apple's prices.

The competitive pressure has prompted Apple to sell older models of its iPhones at prices below the newest model and introduce a smaller, less expensive version of its iPad.

The impact of that shift can be seen in Apple's fiscal third quarter, a three-month period ending in June.

It marked the second straight quarter that Apple Inc.'s earnings have fallen from the previous year after a decade of steadily rising profits. The company earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per share, in its fiscal third quarter, a 22 percent drop from $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per share. The earnings topped the average estimate of $7.31 per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Apple's revenue during the quarter barely budged from last year, resulting in the smallest gain since the Cupertino, Calif., company unleashed a mobile computing revolution with the iPhone's debut six years ago.

Revenue totaled $35.3 billion in the latest quarter versus $35 billion a year ago. Analysts had projected that revenue would be unchanged from a year ago.

The mid-range of Apple's forecast for the current quarter ending in September calls for revenue of $35.5 billion, which would be a slight decline from last year. The company didn't predict what its earnings will be for the current year, but analysts are bracing for another decrease from last year.

In a Tuesday research note, Topeka Capital analyst Brian White said the quarter ending in September will cap "a year to forget" for Apple. He is counting on the company to do better during its next fiscal year, largely because he believes Apple will invent a new line of devices.

Apple hasn't released a breakthrough product since the iPad came out three years ago, raising concerns the company has lost its touch since the October 2011 death of founder Steve Jobs.

Tim Cook, who succeeded Jobs as Apple's CEO, tried to assure analysts that the company can still innovate, echoing a common theme he has raised in other public appearances this year. "We are working on some things we are really proud of," he said during a conference call Tuesday. "We will see how it does and announce things as we are ready."

There has been recurring speculation that Apple is working on a high-tech watch that can be tethered to an iPhone to allow people to see important updates and other online information simply by looking at their wrists. Both Jobs and Cook have hinted in past years that Apple is working on a new product that will revolutionize televisions the same way that the company changed the way people use phones and tablet computers. Cook didn't mention a watch or new TV product during Tuesday's call.

"Apple is clearly in between innovation cycles, so Wall Street is going to hyperventilate," Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said.

If Apple follows its usual schedule, the next generation of the iPhone will hit the market in September or October.

In the meantime, a growing number of people are buying older models of the iPhone, particularly in less developed countries where incomes are lower. The iPhone 4 and 4S sell for less than the latest version, the iPhone 5, yet can still run the latest software.

This phenomenon helped Apple sell 31.2 million iPhones in the quarter, a 20 percent increase from the same time year ago.

But the shift to the older models undercut Apple's profit margins. The iPhone sold for an average of $581 in the past quarter, down from an average of $608 a year ago.

Consumers typically don't pay anywhere near those prices for iPhones because they get discounts from wireless carriers in return for two-year contract commitments. Most U.S. wireless carriers sell the iPhone 5 for $199 and the 4S for $99. The iPhone 4 is usually free with a contract commitment.

IPhone prices would fall even further if Apple decides to design a cheaper model aimed specifically at lower-income countries.

Cook is hoping the iPhone's shrinking average sale price benefits Apple in the long run by introducing more first-time buyers of smartphones to the company's products, including its iTunes store for music, video, books and apps. Revenue tied to iTunes, software and services climbed by 25 percent from last year to $4 billion.

The intensifying battle in the iPad market clipped Apple in the latest quarter. The company sold 14 percent fewer tablets ? 14.6 million in the past quarter compared with 17 million a year ago. The average iPad's price plunged 15 percent from last year to $436, down from $515 last year.

The sharp decline reflects Apple's decision to sell a smaller version of the iPad at the end of last year to counter the threat posed by mini tablets sold by Google, Amazon and other rivals.

Google is expected to unveil the next generation of its Nexus tablets on Wednesday in San Francisco. The current Nexus tablet with a seven-inch display screen and 16 gigabytes sells for $199, 40 percent below the price for an iPad Mini with an eight-inch display and the same amount of storage.

Japan's Abe vows to keep focus on economy after big election win

TOKYO | Mon Jul 22, 2013 10:10am BST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, fresh from a strong election victory, vowed on Monday to stay focused on reviving the stagnant economy and sought to counter suspicions he might instead shift emphasis to his nationalist agenda.

The victory in parliament's upper house election on Sunday cemented Abe's hold on power and gave him a stronger mandate for his prescription for reviving the world's third-biggest economy.

At the same time, it could also give lawmakers in his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), some with little appetite for painful but vital reforms, more clout to resist change.

"If we retreat from reforms and return to the old Liberal Democratic Party, we will lose the confidence of the people," Abe told a news conference on Monday.

He emphasized that his priority remains proceeding with his "Abenomics" programme of hyper-easy monetary policy, government spending and economic reform, describing it as the cornerstone of other policy goals.

"It is not easy to overcome 15 years of deflation," Abe said. "It is a historic project. We will concentrate on that. We won't be able to strengthen the financial base for social security without a strong economy. The same goes for security and diplomacy."

Abe's LDP and its coalition partner, New Komeito, won 76 of the 121 seats contested. Along with seats that weren't up for election, the bloc now has a commanding 135 seats in the 242-seat upper chamber.

The win also raises the chances of a long-term Japanese leader for the first time since the reformist Junichiro Koizumi's rare five-year term ended in 2006.

It also ends a parliamentary deadlock that began in 2007 when Abe, then in his first term as premier, led his party to a humiliating upper house defeat that later forced him to resign. The LDP remains short of a majority on its own.

Ever since Abe stormed back to power with a big win in a December lower house poll, some - including Japanese businesses with a big stake in the matter - have worried the hawkish leader will shift focus to the conservative agenda that has long been central to his ideology.

That agenda includes revising the post-war pacifist constitution, strengthening Japan's defence posture and recasting Tokyo's wartime history with a less apologetic tone.

Despite the hefty win, Abe's mandate was undercut by low voter turnout, with 52.61 percent of eligible voters casting ballots, more than 5 percentage points below the turnout in the last upper house poll in 2010. That could keep up pressure to stay focused on the economy.

"THREE FACES"

For now, many experts suggest, Abe will stick with economic matters as he tries to beef up his so-far disappointing economic reform plans. He also confronts a decision on whether to go ahead with raising the 5 percent sales tax to 8 percent next April, part of a planned doubling by October 2015 aimed at reining in Japan's massive public debt.

"My understanding is that Abe-san has three faces: Abe as right-wing, Abe as a pragmatist, Abe as the economic reformer," said Shinichi Kitaoka, president of the International University of Japan. "He has been showing the third face so far and will try to do the same after the election."

Still, Abe is moving towards security policy changes that mark a big shift in a country that has prided itself on pacifist ideals even as it built up a military bigger than Britain's.

Abe reiterated on Monday that he wants to debate changing a self-imposed ban on exercising the right of "collective self-defence", or aiding an ally under attack.

The ban means Japan would be unable to intercept an enemy missile fired at a U.S. navy ship, Abe noted, which he said would call into question the U.S. alliance itself.

Abe's government is also reviewing the possibility of acquiring a pre-emptive strike capability and creating a Marine force to protect remote islands such as those at the core of a territorial row with China.

One clue to how Abe intends to proceed on the touchy topic of wartime history will be whether he visits the Yasukuni Shrine for war dead, where Japanese leaders convicted as war criminals by an Allied tribunal are also honoured, on the emotive August 15 anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War Two.

A pilgrimage to the shrine would outrage China, where bitter memories of Japan's past militarism run deep, and upset Washington, which fears a further fraying of Tokyo's already fraught relations with its neighbours.

Abe moved quickly to improve ties with China and South Korea at the start of his first 2006-2007 term but it is unclear whether he will repeat that success in his second.

He has since taken a tougher stance towards Beijing, but reiterated on Monday his "door is always open" to diplomacy.

Ties between China and Japan have been seriously strained by territorial rows and feuds over wartime history. Concerns are simmering about the risk of an unintended clash near disputed isles in the East China Sea where Japanese and Chinese vessels have been playing a cat-and-mouse game for months.

"In that environment, something could go wrong," said Michael Green, Japan Chair at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. "That's the Black Swan."

Abe again said he wants to revise the 1947 constitution, drafted by U.S. occupation forces after Japan's defeat and not altered since, although he made clear that was a long-term goal.

Conservatives see the constitution as not only restricting Japan's right to defend itself but as responsible for eroding traditional mores such as duty to the state.

The LDP and smaller parties that also favour revising the constitution failed to obtain the two-thirds majority required in both houses before a constitutional revision can be put before the government in a referendum.

The LDP's coalition partner is cautious about changing the charter's signature war-renouncing Article 9 which, if taken literally, bans maintenance of armed forces.

Sunday's election also left many wondering about the future of a competitive two-party democracy in Japan.

The opposition Democratic Party of Japan, which surged to power in 2009 only to be ousted last year, suffered its worst drubbing since its founding in 1998.
